Take it with a pinch of salt:

http://vr-zone.com/articles/nvidia-plans-geforce-gtx-275-against-radeon-hd-4890/6719.html?doc=6719

"VR-Zone learned about a suprise counterattack from Nvidia against the Radeon HD 4890 RV790 card where both camps' offerings are slated for launch on April 6th. Nvidia has briefed their partners only very recently and details have been pretty vague so far. However, it seems Nvidia is confident that this card will be able to compete, if not, wins its competitor's offering.

CJ told us that GeForce GTX 275 is gunning for US$229-$279 price range which competes directly against the Radeon HD 4890 card at similar price point. One possible configuration of the card could be 216 SPs, 512-bit memory interface and higher clocks than GTX 260. Another less possible config could be 240 SPs with 448-bit memory interface."

Pardon?

Continued competition between the two camps is never a bad thing. :)

Just have to wait and see.

If the 4890 isn't just clock speed increases and a few tweaks, this could bite NVidia in the ass.

ATI did it before with extra Shader Processors than everyone was expecting, what if they did it again?

Well that's the thing - there are claims that 'RV790 is not a faster RV770', but there are others who still think that it is just going to be a 55nm 4870 with higher clock speeds.

Perhaps ATI are going to stuff in more SPs as well as more MHz?
If not, it won't beat the GTX 285, but it will probably be a good bit cheaper.
If they do make it something special, then the GTX 285 could be doomed.

i reckon this wil be one of the cores from the gtx295 on a single gpu card so it will fit in nicely just behind the gtx285 but still ahead of the gtx260.

^^This, Nvidia are always on the lookout for a cheap way to sell new numbers on their cards. They already have the fabrication facilities and technology to produce them, it'll be a GTX260 with a bit more grunt, say just under the power of a GTX280

Ati says the card will compete with the gtx260 but then again they said the 4870 would compete with the 9800gtx...;)

Yeah, when they talk about 'competing' they mean price wise. When the 4870 was first introduced, the 9800 GTX was about £200, when the 4870 came out Nvidia slashed the price on it, although it only ended up falling down to about £160 so it still looked like an awful buy for a while. To these companies, competition is about price, performance is pretty much a marketing feature to help them against their competition.

Eh, I don't really care so long as they keep it in the same product range. To be honest it would've been more sensible if the GTX 260-216 were the GTX 270.

Look at this from fudzilla!!!! :

"Thus far, the only Nvidia discreet GTX 200-series GPU with a “2x5” naming scheme has been the enthusiast GTX 295. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the GTX 275 will be a dual-GPU solution, however it does imply that this card might be a spinoff of the GTX 295 GPU running at a lower core speed."

Err what about the GXT285!! Lol muppets

Edit: I see they have altered it now :D, original copy above

...aaaaand Fudzilla loses all credability. Oh wait, they didn't have any to begin with. :p

More from fud:

"RV790 cards are shortly going into production and we have learned that RV790 Asic doesn’t have the same pin layout out as the RV770.

At first we believed it's the same chip, just tuned slightly faster, but then we got an information that RV790 is a new chip with RV770 fundamentals done better.

The PCB and the pin layout will be different for RV790 and we also heard that the new board will have two power connectors, one 6-pin and one 8-pin, but this doesn’t come as surprise as 4870 has the same.

The RV790 chip is not pin compatible with RV770 boards, so partners will have to change the layout of the boards to accommodate the new chip. Radeon HD 4890 is the most spoken possible brand, but knowing ATI's current GPU management, this can change in a blink of an eye, at least until the boxes are produced. "
