Finally got my new car. Pics of an AWD Datsun with a straight 6 inside

I didn't think the idea of a sleeper was to look ugly

Technically, a sleeper can look as ugly as possible. The idea of a sleeper is a car that looks a bit crap or standard but in fact goes like the proverbial. What the OP has purchased is something ugly, with just about enough power to make it go reasonably fast.

I like it, but I wouldn't have bought one if I had 4k.

Now cut those springs, it will look evil low.

Says the guy with a Fiesta in his sig...

It's mine... And I didn't pay 4 grand for it though did I? The Fiesta only relieved me of £600 ;)

Although my Fiesta is hardly boner inducing, it's not as bland and weird as that thing.

But why does it have to be ugly? I'd understand if it was like a base spec E36 with a M engine in it. It will look basic, bottom of the range and will still be a sleeper and suprise everyone, without looking like the owner has no eyes.

It's not really a sleeper is it, it's a 200bhp automatic Jap car, its what, 0-60 in 8-9 seconds? It looks like a Nissan Maxima, never a sleeper really, which I guess isnt suprising as were it released over here as its successor was, it WOULD have been a Maxima.

As I said in another post, I'm buying it for it's potential once my insurance history settles down.

I could convert it to a manual easy enough. Skyline or Stagea gearbox will do the job nicely, can probably get one of those that's still bolted onto the back of an RB25 and it'll drop straight in. Whether I do, or whether I go down the route of beefing up that autobox depends mainly on how many miles I'm likely to be doing after the changes in work and whether my left leg gets any better over the course of this year.

I agree with Ryder's comment about the ride height. The RWD versions sit a little bit lower. It's another job for the list ;)

Please read my post again. I said it can be ugly or standard while having the performance of a superior car.

What are you going to do about a clutch then?

Manual conversions are quite well documented, but I'll leave the specifics to the guy doing the conversion. He's done enough of them that I'm sure he'll find a way. I think you have to cut a hole for the pedal to go through.

It's going to be quite a bit of work I can imagine. You say your insurance was a factor, I thought insurance companies HATED imports? How much is it insured for?

You would have been better off with your standard generic German cruiser for that money. This is going to cost you a little more than you think.

I think he said £400.

Don't think the OP wanted a german barge, so this seems more fitting, plus it suits his work just as well. Wouldn't have paid that much unfortunately, but if it's what you want and you have the dosh why not, you only live once.

Have to say, insurance on all my LHD imports was marginally cheaper than the 3 series BMW with half the horsepower (and 1/6th of the value) that I'm now driving, go figure! :D

Insurance companies are like wimin. Neither make sense and both rob you blind of your money :p

You'd love it even more if I told you that they claimed the BMW was a 'high powered RWD car' as one of the reasons for ramping up the price.......Needless to say I had to point out what they were currently, and previously, insuring me on :p

Still, s'all good. Not complaining :)

I told the insurance it's worth 4 grand, which actually works out about right. That said with the new IVA rules coming in, I might call them to revise that figure.

That said, the policy schedule just states "market value" and given the only ones you ever see sold are heavily modified examples over on Driftworks, I might do alright.

From a practical perspective yes a German barge, or that OCUK favourite, the Mondeo, would have been a better choice (my boss would be fine with me turning up in a Mondeo or a Golf, he just didn't want me looking like a chav) hell fixing up the bodywork on my Volvo 940 would have been a more sensible choice. I'll freely admit that. (The 940 is staying around as a backup car for both me and my GF and will also be used to avoid Tesco door dings)

Actually, no I wont, the most sensible choice would have been to sacrifice my car allowance and ask my boss to give me a company car with no private use on it, it would most likely be a VW Jetta.

But I want a car I can have fun in. I've not enjoyed the (admittedly few) BMWs I've driven. I like oddball and rare cars (if I had the money I'd buy a Mazda AZ-1 even though they're massively overpriced and totally impractical) and I can't get insured on a decent Scooby or Skyline.

Definitely not worth 4k but I like it because it's different.

Don't let the guys recommending you BMW's and Merc's see the interior, whatever you do!!:p
