Yep. Mind you the consoles don't have things easy atm either. Sure they have better titles on the 'horizon' but at present things are stale on either platform.
Pinkfloyd has it spot on with regards to development time and costs. Right now if you're going to start off with a new game, from scratch with a new engine you'll really need a lot of time and cash. Better to use an existing engine and go from there. I first noticed games taking long to develop right after HL2 arrived on the scene. Right after that 3D gaming really took off and so did costs as each generation of GPU had gamers demanding increasingly better visuals.
The only PC titles I play right now are older RTS's like AoE3, AoE2, and Commando's 2. My last PC title was the superb Fallout 3 on steam...which now crashes about 5 times in 10mins. Great. The PC just needs more variation in gaming like the old days, where we had racers like G.Crammond's F1 series, adventure titles like Westwood's voxel powered Blade Runner as well as more RPG classics like The Witcher. Its all stale FPS's and first person engines now.
