Can't remember mine (1970) but a friend just got married and went to Thailand for honeymoon ........ total cost £18,000. Luckily they both have good jobs and don't owe anything and they had a really good time but it seemed a lot of dosh to me.

You certainly did get off lightly if thats your only outlay Veg - mine was three years ago and it came in at around the 15K mark.

Weddings, typically, are astronomical in cost but don't have to be. It really depends on what you want.

My wife - a Kiwi, living in Scotland but with parents/family abroad - was in agrrement with me that we should have a small gathering of people for our 'formal' wedding in Scotland. There were a few factors that led to us keeping it friends/family, not least of which was my father's detioriating health, but we decided on a number and went with that. I think we had 22 people in total but then we did have it in The Old Course, St Andrews, so not cheap by any means.

However, it was nowhere near the 10 or 20 grand figures that liberally get thrown around by the Wedding mags (also - amusingly - almost solely funded by venues and wedding service providers).

We then did the same thing in NZ but at a fraction of the price. We got nothing less from it, in fact in a lot of ways it was far more positive and we felt less like wedding commodities and more like people who wanted to do quite a nice thing.

OP - if you want to spend a lot of money, it's easy to do. If you want to have the best day of your life (maybe twice!) and NOT just BACS your salary over to a wedding provider then that can also be easily done. See what your better half likes, decide on what you both like and then think of the options.

But please ... stay away from the Wedding mags ;)

Girlfriend's parents said they are giving us £15k for the wedding when we get married. Sounds like a good deal to me!

Around £10k - £12k here plus honeymoon at £3.5k...

Good call - OP I included the honeymoon in my original quote and mine was 3.5K as well. All in all it depends on what you want.

We got married in North Queensferry overlooking the Forth Bridges and there was around 80 people there for the service, that included a 5 course meal + drinks and band at night. For the evening reception there was perhaps another 80 or so guests and a buffet.

However I've also had friends that have spent £500 on their wedding - short registrar service followed by a bar lunch. At the end of the day it's not how much or how little you spend, nor is it how many guests / family you invite - the day belongs to the bride and groom and its what you both are happy with that counts :)

Well, off the top of my head (getting married a week on sat)

Meal for close family - £500
Buffet (heavily discounted) - £500
Flowers - £350
Dress - £600
Kilt - £1100
Rings - £500
Band - £400
Drinks - £500
Church - £150
Organist - £60
Balloons / Table decorations - £250

That's all I can think of at this hour - total pretty much £5000, plus weeks honeymoon £3000.

Do you mind if I ask you why that's a "good deal"? How much do you expect it to cost?

I have no idea about how much weddings cost or how much I even plan to spend. I was just told by the girlfriend that we would be getting this money to pay for the wedding.

Friends have told me they spent between £10K and £20K. Where that sort of money came from I don't know but both me and my girlfriend agree that sums like that would be better spent on a house deposit. £10K-£20K to me is a huge sum of money.

This is why I'll never get married. I just can't see why anyone would spend 15k on a one-off event. It's ridiculous.

Agreed, to an extent.

But only if she also agrees ... otherwise, you, my friend, are ****** :)

£15k has become the norm in the same way that a month's salary became the norm (20 years ago?) for a De Beer's Diamond.

It's Marketing. And when your wedding becomes someone else's bonus, I'll ask questions all day long :)
