Alcohol - Taste or Drunk?

Getting drunk or getting excessively drunk?

I guess it depends on your definition of 'drunk'.

Can anyone say they would drink beer/cider/wine/spirits if it had no physiological effect on them whatsoever?

Yes to cider and Beer, no to the rest, they're only consumed for the effects.

Either.

If you're beginning to lose control of your faculties, I'd say that's "drunk".

Yes. That's what enjoying the taste is all about.

I don't think I've made my point clearly (it is late and I am sober).

What I'm trying to say is that, yes, most people enjoy the taste of alcohol. Many people (myself included) enjoy it way too much.

However, have people (myself included) learned to like the taste because their brain has, over time, associated the euphoric feeling they get from drinking the alcohol with the taste of the drink itself. Therefore you can still drink a small amount, not get drunk (depending on your definition) and still enjoy it because your body is saying "hey, this makes me feel good, more please".

Of course it would be impossible to re-create the flavour of an alcoholic beverage without the alcohol so my previous question of whether or not you would drink beer/wine/spirits/etc without the physiological effects isn't particularly valid.

Both. There are a fair few drinks that I really enjoy such as pina colada, malibu and coke, various somerset farm ciders. When I'm drinking to get drunk its usually vodka and lemonade. I used to drink vodka redbull, but I drank far too many and ended up with a rotten stomach/palpitations on the hangover every time.

Taste

Stella never goes near me, you can smell someone drinking it a mile off. I don't like drinking to the point of getting drunk but I can handle more than a few pints before I'm tipsy.

If I'm at a party I only drink spirits, just to get drunk.

If it's lunchtime at college and im playing pool, I'll have a beer, just for the taste.

I'll never drink beer at a party and I'll never drink spirits for the taste.

A/S/L? :D

Actually, in all seriousness, I'd be interested to know the ages of those who have posted in this thread. I'm wondering whether those who drink purely for the sole purpose of getting bladdered are mostly young 'uns.

Personally, I drink because I enjoy the taste - and now I'll only ever drink stuff I actually like. Whereas when I was younger I had no qualms about drinking anything and everything, as long as it had some alcoholic content. My reasons are two-fold: firstly, I dislike hangovers more than I like being drunk, and secondly, I've lived abroad where drinking is considered a social pastime and not something one does solely in order to get hammered. Us Brits seem to be fairly unique in that we generally drink to get drunk, rather than drinking for the pleasure of having a drink.

Fosters tastes like sick. I thought it was an australia beer, however its not sold anywhere in australia

Exactly Castlemaine is the proper Australian lager to drink. When i was sixteen i would have blue wikkids (innit) just to get drunk whereas now it's to enjoy the taste. Alco pops just make me feel sick now. Nothing like a decent cold pint out of a tap.

Normally get 1.5l vodka between me and mate. Drink that to get drunk before we go out then drink real ale when on the town, it tastes so good.

i find i have to drink about 4 o5 4x before i start to enjoy the flavour. WHen i say enjoy i mean ignore.

Both really.

Although lately I've been finding it hard to get drunk since I don't find it that appealing anymore.
