Second hand, nearly new bits are the key :-)

Got the clock set for £100 with only 3000 miles use - saved £250.
Carbon dash - £40 from ebay - saved £70
Manifold - £80 - saved £210
Seats - £200 - saved £260
Steering wheel and QR boss - £50 - saved £110

And so on. Plus I had the donor car already - I'm not factoring in the cost of that - you could easily add £500-£1000 if you needed to buy a donor then refresh all the parts used.
 
No, age related.

Your reg is based on major parts used during the build - chassis, engine, gearbox, steering, brakes, drive shafts and diff. Everything bar the chassis and the steering was from the donor, so I got an age related plate - same age as the donor.

They don't care where everything else comes from.

You get a Q plate if the major parts are second hand and/or can't be traced or you have no recpts showing they are new (even if the plainly are).

You get a new plate if all the major parts bar one item are new. So you can have an old engine (no cat needed) on a new reg plate.

If you re-use the donors chassis - you keep that reg - the reg is tied to the chassis. Depending how many other major parts you also re-use (on a totting up points based system) you don't even need to SVA/IVA it -just a built up inspection report (to verify the chassis number) and an MOT.

Then they relieve you of £270 to get it registered (12 months tax and £60 first registration fee) :-)
 
well, i'm way off that bit :p

Still looking into various options before placing the order for the base kit. I'm on the hunt for the donor car at the moment. I know the post 91 2lt sierras have the MT75 box i need, but i've read that the 4x4's also have the mt75 box?

the 4x4's tend to go cheaper than the 2ltr's

They do but the boxes have a another output shaft to the front for the 4x4 system - you don't really want that unless your building a 4x4 kit.
 
are they the ones which used to be on the car? Don't think there was anything wrong with them......on a different car.

Indeed. It's not that there was anything particularly wrong with the wheels themselves, RS-Rs can look good on the right car. But on a westfield/caterham they just look completely out of place, and then of course there's the issue of the weight and size of them.
 
I did toy with the idea of putting the RSR's on my Scorpio Cosworth as they looked quite good on my old sierra (verrrry old photos - 2001 - before you comment on the daft spoiler ;-)

I still miss that car, although the spoiler would have been binned by now if I hadn't turned it into the Westfield - yes - that Sierra was the donor car. Old Fords never die they simply rust away!

New hweels arrived today ;-)

Old wheels and tyres weigh 20kg - new wheels weigh 14 kg :-) That's 24kg for the whole car but they say weight saved on the wheels is like x4 saved anywhere else - so I've shaved the equivalent of nearly 100kg from a car that only wieghed 605kg in the first place!

Need to play around with the ride heights a little and the front cycle wing.

What do *I* think? Hmm, I'm not sure. Think I'll reserve judgement until I go out on Sunday for a blat :-)

Hmm, what next. The Cosworth is looking rather nervous - "I'm not ready to give up my engine" it keeps whispering. We'll see :-)
