MG ZR 160's (or alternatives)

The last car my Grandad owned was a Vauxhall Astra. My other Grandfather had.. actually, LOL, he had a Peugeot 306 XL.

He was obviously a fine gentleman with impeccable taste ;)

Not sure what the gear ratios are like on the Xsara (longer than the GTI-6 I assume!) but thats part of the appeal of the GTI-6 really, nice close gears that let you wring the neck out of the engine.

The Xsara VTS is to the 306 GTI-6 what the 309 GTI was to the 205 GTI, just as capable but looked cack and wont hold value as well! How many 309s do you see compared to 205s now!

What does a grandad car look like? Can Grandads often be found driving 3 door cars then? I thought Grandads into cars drove Jaguars. Are you saying a Xsara looks like a Jaguar?

One could use your e39 as an example, still not get it? A man of your intelligence should be able to understand

I have a Rover 25 GTI, pretty much the same except the engine isn't tuned as highly and the suspension setup is a little harder/sportier on the MG (the GTI has a difference setup over the standard 25 as far as I know..). Good, fun car to drive. Surprised a couple of cars, although dressed up as a ZR you wont be surprising anyone!

Watch out for rust as mentioned, can't really do much about preventing head gasket failures.

I'd love a ZS 180 although I'm actually more concerned about rust than reliability! In fact, a ZT 190 would be very welcome! Just want a V6 really!

decent Honda Civic 1.8VTI would get my vote

been driving one for about 4 years now - and although ultimately its not super quick (0-60 in about 8 seconds) - having a rev range up to 8300 is very fun.

that plus Limited Slip Diff - as standard - slow speed tight cornering is very very fun

great car for the money and pretty bulletproof too- nothing major has gone wrong on mine and I'm up to 132k miles now

just seen someone else above recommended one too !

cheers, Mk.

Any good for £2500 for an 03 reg kinda car in good shape?

Any good alternatives for the same money which are equal in terms of pace/handling, good on fuel and significantly better without being a barge? Or indeed much bigger than the ZR? And won't feel too unsettled around a country road? lol :)

Honestly, there are so many opinions about, some will like this car and some others.

For the price you get a lot of car for the money MG wise. They are fun cars, god knows my 1.4 is fun. HGF isn't the worst thing that can happen you know, I replaced mine for £70 because I caught it early. Just keep an eye out every other day on the coolant.

Remember, there is usually a reason the head gasket fails, more often than not something else such as the water pump or inlet manifold has gone causing the failure. My inlet manifold wasn't in great condition and was leaking coolant which = my head gasket going.

power is the same in the 25 and zr
the MG had no engine mods done to it

He's right though, it's a rebadged Rover. It's the same as the difference between a Ford Mondeo ST220 and a Ford Mondeo LX - only Ford didn't see the need to hide the Ford badges.

Yes, technically it is a rebadged Rover...but it's so much more than that.

No it's not. It's a Rover 45 V6 Sport, so to speak. The relationship between the ZS and the 45 is identical to that between a Mondeo LX and an ST220, a Vectra Elite and a Vectra VXR, a BMW 330i SE and a BMW 330i Sport, an Audi A3 2.0 TDI SE and an Audi A3 S-Line...

Except they worked on the chassis, suspension, (i think power), looks and interior?

What's the typical cost of replacing a HG before anything is even wrong with it. Just had one pop on my Punto without warning and would rather not go through it again.

Which is exactly what all the above manufacturers did as well?

Yes but Audi turned the A3 into the S3. MG took the 45 from Rover did more than just some rebranding then released it as the ZS.

Yep, I agree with people saying it's a rebadged Rover.

But people saying its 'just' a rebadged Rover, are wrong.
