Demoing/ordering 7.1 home cinema next week

Hey Tank, good work in standing your ground! If you want floorstanders, just get 'em! I think people are trying to help by saving you money and space, but if you have the money and space then go for it. You'll get a pretty involving 360 degree soundstage using floor standers all round (can you stretch to another floor stander as a centre??).

I agree with going for the Kuro- it's not just the panel that's important (or size) but video processing too. The Kuros are the best, whether it's the 6090 or the 600M.

And lastly, with any savings you make (on the Blu Ray for instance) get the best amp you can afford without sacrificing the components you've already chosen- the Arcam AVR600 is sounding good from early reviews, but is pretty dear.

Enjoy your setup, it sounds great! I'm envious!

seriously floorstanders as rears are useless. it's not about saving money, it's about the right balance. if you don't like the dipoles, could get 686 which is more than enough for rears. Instead of 684 rears, you could get some better B&W front floorstanders for that - like the CM9 :) with a Rotel amp - that would be my ideal

but your choice

PS also make sure your floor standers are a couple of feet from walls, or it will not sound good

My idea for using a floor stander as a centre was a bit tongue in cheek, as most UK homes really would look out of place with 3 floor standers at your screen. It's a good idea in principle though- the centre speaker is one of the most heavily utilised, deffo more than the rears (all four of them) and potentially more than the F and L too. For a while I used a bridged power amp for my centre speaker with a seperate power amp for my front pair, and it was easy to switch off whichever one I needed. Listening to only the centre really surprised me how much comes through it (much more than just on screen dialogue).

So a 'beefy' centre is desirable.

I's still say if I had the cash and the space, I'd want seven identical full range speakers.

As far as studio mixing is concerned, they don't use speakers per se, they are nearfield monitors. Essentially the same I know, but the fact that they have different names indicates they are for different purposes. A mixing studio is nothing like a cinema or your living room- they need accurate speakers to make an accurate mix, with as few room interactions as possible. A good sound engineer knows what it sounds like in the studio is not how consumers will experience it, but will be able to translate what he's doing into the cinema experience. Sound mixing at high volumes in a huge room filled with seats and last night popcorn would be pretty tricky. :p

The AVR600 is a very good amp inital reviews are saying it is equal in some areas and better in others compared to the old AV9 and AV7 which is good going for an integreated amp and with prices increasing for the Denon/Yamaha rivals the price isn't too bad.

I suspect the AVR888 processor is going to be superb this with a couple of Bryson power amps, PMC speakers and one or two SVS PB13-Ultras should make a cracking setup.

Thanks for the input guys I'm happy with the B&W HTM61 for a center speaker and I think the Onkyo TX-NR906 will do the job nicely.

Actually stand mounts create a better 3D sound field than floor standers that suffer from more cabinet defraction and reflections due to the bigger front baffle size.
Depending how you set the sub up, little or no LF will goes to the rears either !

It's not about saving money, but putting the best sounding and balanced system together. As opposed to some willy waving setup that doesn't perform as well... ;).

Arcam amp.... now there's a good idea....... Better still would have been separated pre/processor and dedicated power amps....Some great used bargains about, that would blow this set up away....

I see what you're saying but lets be honest here, what ever I bought there would always be something better fact. Its got nothing to do with willy waving its to do with these guys why I'm having floor standers for the rears they will be a nightmare!

To be fair, spending that amount of money and letting cats run a mock in a room like that you're asking for trouble full stop. Anyway, not telling you what to do but I'm sure your floorstands will make great scratching posts for the cats.

Let us know what you finally go for and get some pics up :)

Awesome cats, they're proper tiger-minis.

I don't think they'd be an issue though, most cats are careful and how the **** is something the size of a rugby ball going to be able to topple a speaker?

They're nuts and the picture is old they are a little bit bigger now hovering around the 15-18lbs mark and they have knocked over many things a lot heavier than them selfs, its in there nature to be crazy lol. I think the floor standers are safe from being knocked over though thank god.

looks like your overfeeding one of your cats ;)

No hes just a big boy and was the largest in the litter of three, his dad was huge.

Okay, because my blatant attempts to persuade you to get a 600M failed....... I urm..........

Kinda upgraded my 500M order, to a 600M today lol
