So my choice is between a free Nokia with line rental of £15pm or an iPhone for £60 and a line rental of £45pm...

Why am I still hesitating and not going for the Nokia?

Erm. Not sure. Over the first 12 months you save £420 with the Nokia. You could buy a new 16GB iPhone 3G on Pay as you Go and unlock it for £391.27. So even if you went out and got yourself an iPhone as well, you'd still be better off. And that isn't even taking into account the fact that you are most likely on an 18 month contract, so the savings will increase...

Cos it's like comparing apples and pears and it depends what you want in a phone. If what you're after is a very capable mid range phone the 5800 is more than up to the job and great value.

Hmmmm. Want something I can use a bit like satnav to "walk me in" to places I'm trying to find, as a free service.

A decent online browser

Easy-to-use

That's it really

The iphone is vastly superior in style, quality & interface to the Nokia 5800. But the Nokia 5800 is still a good phone and you can run Garmin Mobile XT on the 5800 and this will 'walk you in'

Have had the iphone 2g for a year (sold it today after getting my E71), a great phone and the GUI is excellent. I suspect I will get another iphone sometime in the future.

Gah! Tricky decision. I reckon the Nokia is about £500 cheaper over the 18 mth contract. I'm tempted to do what Cobertizo says.

For browsing the iphone is far better so if thats important go for that. The 5800 is indeed a good phone though.

I have the same choice, I'm getting the Nokia.

Brilliant web browser.
Brilliant music functions.
Great amount of Apps to download.
No need to Jailbreak to customize it to how you want it to look.

I really like my 5800, as far as I'm concerned it does everything the iPhone does, some things better - expandable memory, replaceable battery, MMS, copy/paste. The little stylus is v. useful too and cleverly unobtrusive. The screen really is great too, very sharp and vibrant :)

That said, the App store is great on the iPhone and there isn't anything comparable, although there are plenty of apps out there, Google Maps, Mobbler and suchlike are great :)

Yes, the iPhone is undoubtedly 'cooler', but if but if you want a well-priced phone with a good touchscreen (and it is v. good), WiFi, GPS, Music (not locked into itunes) and suchlike, you could do an awful lot worse than the 5800 IMO.

*edit*

Also, why not get a 5800, then when the new iPhone comes out in say, September, you'd already have saved £150 towards one if you wanted to get one :)

I'd go for the 5800. The price differential is enormous and the 5800 does most tasks almost as well or better. The iPhone has the better browser, but Opera Mini 4 is almost as good. The music player is better on iPhone, but the S60 music player is certainly good enough. App store is certainly more convenient, but Nokia has a store being launched soon. A quick Google will find you pretty much any app you could possibly need for S60 anyway.
