What coolers to go on a 4870 1gb

DSC02191.jpg

Is this the heatsink you are talking about, if so it is not compatible with the new sapphire HD4870's as they have a different PCB design, mine is held on using rubber bands :p.

My 2x120mm fans are also held on by rubber bands :p

No, that's the good heatsink! My S1 (and a few others reported the same thing) came with tiny little arsed heatsinks for the VRM, instead of the big one.

The original Sapphire HD4870's came with a red PCB which was compatible with this heatsink, the PCB was revised however and is now blue with a more efficient voltage regulation circuit, the heatsink is now too short for the card. (the S1 was purchased around June 2008)

Still none the wiser...

Is it that the mounting holes are different, or simply the heat pipe issue?
If it is just the heatpipe issue, then Im really not fussed as I have a GPU intake fan straight onto the 4870 which would keep a passively cooled heatsink fine and dandy.

the graphics seem out of distortion

Not really sure what you mean by this ??

If my understanding is correct (probably won't be , of course !) graphic corruption is usually caused by faulty card/ram, overclocking too much or overheating & increasing the ram from 512mb to 1gb will not make any difference.

Obviously if your card IS faulty I can see the need for a replacement and you may as well replace with the 1gb version. ( I believe that there is an advantage in some games with the extra ram but it does not increase the speed of the gpu ; just the cards efficiency (??) )

Am running a 512 4870 myself with the Twin Turbo Arctic cooler attached. Dropped both temps and noise substantially BUT increased vrm temps too much. Answer was/is to have a 120 fan blowing from below onto the card ; which reduced the temps of the vrm's to an acceptable level.

My 4870 was one of the first Sapphire ones and I fitted the Cooler a few months ago - since when no issues. Assuming that the card layout of the 1gb card is the same/similar then fitting is /will be straightforward (well it was for me AND I'm no expert!!)

I just bent one of my Vram heatsinks to allow the heatpipe to go through the middle.

You cannot run the HD4870 passively for very long as the temperatures would be very high even with a GPU intake fan, the VRM's would also not get enough Airflow.

My 1st rev sapphire 4870 died due to bunt out VRM's which i did not know about at the time.

Was just looking through the Trad thread and decided to compare my temps.

After 5 mins of ATItool and they are a bit too high for aftermarket cooling (despite being totally silent), this is due to being housed ina different case with very bad air intake (TJ07) as opposed to my old CM 690 with high speed Yates.

Will have to sort new case fans ect out soon.

The twin turbo works well from what ive heard however the VRM does get a lttle toasty compared to the stock heatsink.

I'm going to give the T-Rad2 a go after ive sorted case airflow out.

4870 1gb

I have just put in my new Sapphire 4870 1gb,and thats why i started this thread as to what cooler would be okay for it.
Now i have put it in the comp,i looked at GPU-Z temps, and it just gives me the
GPU-DISPIO=44%
GPU-MEMIO=51%
GPU-SHADERCORE=44
It doesnt give me the 3 VDDC Temps like it did on the 4870 512mb,i have the latest version of GPU-Z.
Is there any other software that will give me those temps?
Thanks

I have the new revision of those 4870s with the black PCB and the new cooler.

I installed RivaTuner, and created two fan profiles, one at 40% of the fan speed, and another on 50%. When idling on desktop at 40% it's very silent and the temps sit around 47C for the GPU and 58C for the memory. Satisfying enough for me.

When gaming I just switch to the other profile (50%), which keeps temps at around 70C max for the GPU and 80C max for the memory. That's after 3-4 hours playing Crysis at maxx settings. It's not quite as silent, but you'll be gaming anyway, so either having speakers or headphones it won't annoy you at all.

That's with an ambient temperature of 23C in my room.

I was looking into buying a cooler for the card my self too, but I can't find any reason to do so, as temps stay quite low, and so does the sound. Hope that helps a bit. :)

What about this Twin Turbo cooler.

Got one on my 4850 and is quiet and oh so chilly. :)
Description says it's compatable with 4870 as well.

Got one on my 4870 and it's very good. Did use the Zalman VGA Ramsinks tho rather than the included ones and also the Akasa Thermal Adhesive (as the supplied stuff is rubbish)

Temps are sorted too, GPU idles in 30's and max 60 on load, VRM's are just under 40 idle and high 60's load (with a Noctua S12 case fan blowing onto them):D

I tried Everest to see if it would tell me what my VRMs temps are,but it didnt.
Could you tell me what software to use to see the VRMs Temps?
GPU-Z doesnt tell me,only the GPU TEMPS.

That's very weird.. I use Everest Ultimate Edition 4.60.1500 and it displays everything, and the sidebar widget is looking not that bad as well.

I've changed the display names on the widget by the way, in case you get confused or something.

What sort of temp decrease did you notice mate

Yes, i do get the 3 gpu temps,in Everest ULtimate Edition, but not the 3 VDDC Temps(VRMs i think they are called)
I get those 3 GPU Temps in GPU-Z,but not the 3 VDDC Temps.
I used to get the VDDC Temps when i had the 4870 512mb v/c,but not since ive had the 4870 1gb v/c,perhaps GPU-Z isnt capable of doing the 4870 1gb,
but it would be nice to know which software would show the VVDC Temps.

At the moment my 3 GPU Temps are 43% 50% 43% on idle.
