Howdy,

My brother keeps calling me and asking me what car to buy, i suggested a few but as i rarely look at cars in this price range i am unsure what would be best for his money.

He has up to 17k to spend, wants somthing as new as possible, sporty but not ridiculous to run as he doesnt understand much about cars.

He has driven a focus ST, Golf GTI, Audi 2.0 TDI Sline, Rx8.

He initially put a deposit down on the golf but had second thoughts as he did kind of jump into it.

I warned him off the RX8 as they are high maintenance. topping up oil ETC.

I thought a golf GTI 30th Edition would be best, or a focus ST.

Is there a decent BMW worth getting at this price? or any other cars ive missed off really.

Why does it have to be nearly new?
A nice 330ci could be had for 17k if he's willing to look at an 06 plate. It would be the new model.

Nearly new as i guess he thinks it will be lower maintenance, he will probably push to an 06 for the right car.. i too thought the diesel A4 an odd choice, i think the car dealer can see he doesnt know much and trying to get rid of old stock, it didnt even have leather!!

If I had £17k and didnt want to see a big hit at trade in time, I'd look at a Honda Integra DC5 for sporty.

Not a fan of the VW range so would give the GTI Golf a miss, find the styling interior wise bland and the whole car lacks something special.

Off the list, Focus ST for me.

330CI anyday, or if he wants something a bit more ...muscular, a Vauxhall Monaro, you can pick up the 6 litre VXR's now for 17K ...even a bit less.

Take your pick! - £17k gives you more choice than you could possibly imagine especially if you are willing to compromise on the "new as possible" part of his requirements.

You don't need to know anything about cars to avoid ridiculous running costs just pick a sensible one to run (not something like an M3 / M5) and get a reputable garage to look after it for you. :)

What does he need in a car?

Because he's currently looking at:

2 hot hatches
1 diesel hatch
1 coupe

Does he need 4 seats? How many miles is he going to be doing a year? Does he care about depreciation? Just how "sporty" does he want? Would he be prepared to own something slightly older, but a thoroughly decent car, for less money so he has a few thousand left in case it should go wrong?

Since your choice of thread title makes it sound like your brother is a bit of a chav, how about a new shape Impreza WRX?

I wouldnt spend 17k of my hard earned on a ST or Golf GTI ED30 tbh, I'd look to spend 10k on a ST3 or Civic Type R or a STD Golf GTI, if Hot hatches are his thing.

He is a bit of a chav, he is an essex boy. accent, tattoo, the works. He doesnt like the imprezza, i did tell him to have a look as brand new ones are dirt cheap. wasnt too interested.

If he walks into a VW dealership with 17k with some negotiation ability he should walk out with a brand new MkV GTI. There are still some unsold ones kicking about, and they aren't exactly shifting them in this climate.

EDIT> Just like to add that a dealer was telling me a few days ago that almost everyone who does walk into his showroom will now go straight in and ask for a used car. People are thinking 'oh it's a recession, ooooh, must save money, must be thrifty so better go used'.

They don't want to shut the factories, new cars are PILING up. They are selling them below cost (as long as you pay cash) to those who haggle hard enough just to shift the bloody things. If you want to be better off than the crowd, don't follow the crowd. Furthermore, because in 5 years time when the economy picks up there will be a massive supply issue of 09 cars in the used car market. So residuals will be better than ever.

Get an Edition 30 and a remap, they're going for some alright prices and has the S3 engine, which the GTI does not.
