Hi me and a mate started the same job 2 weeks ago in a call centre over the weekends. We are both the same age but he told me today that he is getting £8 an hour while I am on £7. He said it was because of his disability which is Tourettes Syndrome. I said that that's the most ridiculous thing ever I've ever heard and was fuming inside, I'm happy for him as I want him to be happy just the principal of the thing. Surely this cannot be allowed?

Why not?

I don't think for a fact it's because of his disablility. Probably more along the lines of he is better at his job than you are.

yeh it can happen im disabled, physically apparently i can work 35 hours and get paid for 40 hours, if i wished. as i can get tired easily.

i don't take it however. but i think the goverments way of helping the disabled.

i don't see how hes he should get extra money though.
the only reason i could get 40 hours pay for 35 is i could be physically to tired to do my work & ineffect could cause me problems in life eg. not enough ££ to pay bills.

does he work different hours? like less?

Well I have three years experience in a call centre (not proud) and he has none. I also have more qualifications. We have only been there two weeks and everyone else is on the same wage regardless of age bar him.

He works the same hours which is 5 on sat and 5 on sun, 10 in total. I can assure you this is not a wind up. His tourettes isn't that bad as he can keep it to a minimum when need be i.e tapping his hand and making coughing noises instead of bips etc.

In that case, get a friend to call him at work as an angry and arrogant customer and watch as he calls him a five knuckle shuffler and be demoted to a lesser paid job.

Tourettes isn't always swearing though, with some people it can be involuntary movements etc. People just see tourettes and assume theyre gonna be cursing every second word.

I feel your anger, as I experience something along the same lines at Uni.

One of my best mates is dyslexic and gets many benefits because of his disability:

over £175 of grant to spend on books/printing EACH YEAR
lecture notes from lecturers which is pretty much what is examined from
along with the obvious extra time in exams

It might be slightly different to a difference in salary, but I do find it annoying how people with disabilities get over compensated. Of course, I don't know how hard everyday life is like though.

Fuming about the principal, happy for him to be getting a decent amount. Try putting yourself in my position.

I'd just be glad that I'm 'normal'.

There will always be a colleague on higher pay. Unless you're the boss or self-employed.

Do something about it.

this is crazy i cant belive he gets more solely because he has tourettes. you sure he didnt just ask for more money? i tried that once at work and to my massive surprise they uped my pay.
