OcUK Students?

Yep sorry. I forgot to mention an additional tuition fee loan. Same terms.

cheers, as said the way some poeple have worded things on other forums made it sound like they had to work out their costs, and had to apply to the likes of a bank (or gov) with these costs to get a loan. rather than being based on your parents income.

But aye, students dont get enough money! I know this is going to start an arguement but as said mine doesn't even cover my cost of rent for halls. And with the views from the 80's where it was once thought you would need a degree to be a bin man its still viewed thata everyone should have a degree of some sort.

I think students get plenty of money. The support for low income students is very generous (basically a minimum government grant + university bursary equal to tuition fees) and loans are adequate for rent + food (some exceptions in london for wealthier students who don't get supported by parents). In addition the large universities offer bursaries way in excess of the minimum required.

Wow, so how do you manage if you cant cover rent for your hall to start with?

all students are low income. The government discriminates against middle class students because of their parents' salaries, which is based on the unfair assumption that their parents are willing to help them out. Whereas infact students are adults.

Yup, SAAS said on my claims letter that ontop of what they give me my parents need to also contribute £1000odd, my mum basically told me to eff off.

I survive with a summer job (trying to get one in aberdeen seems to be a pain...for me) overdraft, and my dad that would prefer to give me money and basically tells me I need to go out drinking  so is willing to lend/give me money. So far this year only needed to borrow a £100 from them, but i think my last rent payment a lot more is going to be needed!

Would also like to point out my parents live togeather so it's not like Iam playing my dad off my mum.

Regular Blokes like you and Me I suppose?

I hope you are not a Student?

Used to be a student, but not anymore. I graduated way back in '95 with a massive debt of £1.5K, and most of that was down to beer money.

As for the PC hardware I don't really bother that much anymore, as long as I can run WoW, Guild Wars and HL2 on the PC then I'm happy. I do plan on upgrading in the near future though, but that system should last me at least 3-4 years before I need to start tinkering again. :)

I'm not a student and I've spent the princely sum of £10 on hardware in the last year :D
I have no interest in and personally see no need to be tinkering with either my laptop or my desktop.
I only use the GD forum for its entertainment value :D

im a student and im constantly blowing money on my pc, always upgrading it etc, but im also doing a computer science degree so i need a good pc but this one im building soon is overkill

well i get my student loan and i spend it on living and upgrading my pc, still live at home so no major overheads, do i worry about money and debts, the answer is yes but its better than spending it getting ****ed

Surely middle class and above unless you want to start discriminating against upper class students. I think the main reason for low income support was to appease critics of the 2006 reform. Also, rightly or wrongly, lower income groups are given incentives to increase social mobility (postive discrimination I guess). Higher education funding has traditionally been paid by the entire tax base to educate a few from professional backgrounds and therefore these grants could be seen as a correction to the system's regressive nature. Also to state that families give no support to students isn't exactly correct. Most middle class students I know do get support from parents or could get it if they asked.

I didn't say that they don't get support, as you say, most do, but it is unfair that the government expects parents to help support their adult children.

I admire your honesty :)

I'm a student and a fairly normal person, waking hours aside :p

Used to spend a good £500 a year on hardware from here, but can't justify it at the moment. My quad-core still takes anything I throw at it and I don't game nearly enough to make it worth upgrading my 8800GT for über-resolution gameplay. I'm still interested in PCs, but I spend more sensibly than I used to. When I need to upgrade, I'll upgrade, but right now I'd much rather have new CDs, meals out and beer than an i7.

I like to consider myself normal :)
Obviously don't use OCUK anymore as I've moved to the States - use Newegg over here who are pure awesome!!

:p
Dad I need a high powered gaming laptop for . . . taking notes, compiling and executing my 200 line java programs. Its complicated it due to the nature of the todays Von Neuman hardware architecture it involves balanced Turing equations and megahertz. You'll just have to trust me. £2,000 should cover it.

Since when did you need a good computer setup for a CS degree?

I planned ahead! My course has a lot of video editing and rendering so I obviously had to get a watercooled quad core... :D

Saying that though, I havent spent any money on my computer since September last year. I can barely afford pasta at the moment, let alone a computer upgrade.

I don't have an overdraft or a maintenance loan, I just work my ass off during the holidays to cover the next term :o
