Pfffft......

Need all the tips and advise I can get please....

I just can't get beyond being mediocre. I've played a good few of the better people on here now over the last couple of days, spent hours playing all these players who are better than me in the hope that being pushed hard would force an improvement, but I'm not getting anywhere.

I can count on one hand the number of rounds (not matches, just rounds!!) I have won against fellow OCUKers in the last week.

Think i'm now on about 1300 BP's in public games and that's my highest so far, still haven't got the 'win 10 ranked in a row' trophy and every single Guile or Blanka I come across I lose to.

I know it's difficult to advise on someones specific gameplay as we all play or characters differently, but bearing in mind the above I really must be doing something fundementally wrong.

I don't mean the above in a sulky, moany way either. Quite the opposite!
Since I've switched to Ryu I've been really, really enjoying the game and I'd really like to be a bit more competative against those I play. I find when a game is tight I get a genuine thrill and rush from it and to win a tight game is a huge buzz (I know I should get out more!!), but more often than not I'm simply getting thumped.
Eventually people will tire of whipping me and I'll be stuck with public games against strangers......

Hmmmmm..........

Chris I feel your pain. I am in exactly the same situation I keep getting thumped. I win the odd round but in reality that is most likely because my opponent makes a mistake not me being that much better. Like the post says above I think we have to learn combos like second nature and some decent openers. This can only come from knowing a character intimately and as such I think you have to settle on learning only one or two characters like this (unless you have simply loads of time).

I also think that, while I left the SF scene back in the snes days, it has carried on since then and we are playing against people who have been with it off and on since then.

I decided after a major whooping last night that I am going to take it off line for a while and learn some characters really well. I will jump on every so often to try out new stuff, but that is the plan for now.

Will still complete the league though ;)

just got and fitted my octagonal restrictor plate. Much much much better - I can actually pull off all the specials now :D

Was a pain to fit though. I know one other person posted in this thread that they had ordered one last friday like me and intended to fit it; EasyG I think. Warning mate - the old square gate one does not some off easily - contrary to what you have seen on youtube with the sanwa parts where the plate easily comes off. No. This one tests you more than ojste. ;)

I hack sawed mine off in the end - I just gentley and carefully cut the plastic bits on the plate that the clips snapped around - not the clips! and then lifted it up.

I had intended not to remove the stick fixture from the case - but for the fitting of the new plate I had to, so you might want to remove it in the first place - up to you. If you are not sure, for instructions on how to do this check this video on you tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXUrTS22fmw. He covers it at some point in that video after he has fitted the buttons.

You will then find that the sanwa octagonal plate will not go on as the clip holes are smaller than the clips. The way I got round this was to just shave a small amount off the clips with nail clippers - works a treat and takes seconds. The plate should just then snap on easily. Refit the stick and then you are away.

Still feels strange playing with a stick - but I will practice - at least now I can do the moves without my character jumping across the screen!

RaMDOM, I'm seriously tempted to upgrade the parts on my SE stick. The octagonal restictor plate makes sense I suppose, gives the stick a more circular rotation rather then square. At the moment I'm finding with Sagat I end up jumping around when I try pulling off a super or ultra, seriously annoying!

I'm no arcade stick expert infact the first I heard about 'sanwa' was from just browsing the threads on these forums, but what benefit will sanwa buttons have over the standard buttons?

I'm definitely going to do mine as soon as the sanwa parts is in stock
the buttons are in stock at gremlin but not the stick

JLF-TP-8YT-SK & 8 of the OBSF-30

then its worth keeping ;)

Let me get some practice in first with this as it is, once you have ordered and fitted yours, I'll come round and see if I notice any difference. ;)

How much is it gonna cost, an additional £25-30? So £100 total for an arcade stick? Can't believe I'm even considering it.

Yea - I will upgrade my parts to Sanwa parts very soon. Think I will wait until I am comfortable with the stick first though.

Seriously, I know Margaret (I think it was anyway) said that I should stick it out with the square plate, however I just could not and the difference with the octagonal plate is instant.

The stick actually 'notches' into place so you can feel when you are the direction you want to be and it also helps to keep the stick in place so when you are walking forward you do not inadvertently jump.

~£25 for the stick and ~£15 for the 8 buttons

thats all from one place

im going to leave using the stick for now, it will feel like using another different stick once its modded
too much frustration switching again lol

Jump online lets get some practice games going, I got half an hour.

The issues with octagonal gates are that it encourages the bad practice of "riding the gate" and also the activation area for the diagonals is greatly reduced (harder to hit, further encouraging riding the gate).

Both will use a square gate, you'll want all the practice you can get.

It will feel different but not drastically, you may as well keep on with the square gate practice

SE because they are in stock and you can then buy the Sanwa parts at a later date and it will be the same as the TE but cheaper.

They still in stock, like, today? Also, how easy was it to fit the parts? I can't solder for love nor money so that's out of the question for me :o

I understand this however, as a great man once said 'a man has got to know his limitations', and I know mine.

What is wrong with riding the gate? the activation areas are less but the distance between all points is the same. I have heard that the japanese like playing with square plates as the activation areas are larger so you do not have to hit the plate at all.

I think that once the muscle memory of where forward, back, up, down, etc etc are there I may try a square plate - for now though will stick with the mod.
