Accepting money to fix a work mate/ friend's computer?

Most times I will just accept it if I don't know them that well, but if I know them really well, I will say 'No it's fine' and they will most likely try and offer it u again, at this point I take it...
Sometimes it back-fires though...You'll refuse it, and then they won't offer it 2nd time...

Just take it if its offered...If they don't wanna pay then they shouldn't offer you cash...IMO

You really do talk a massive load of ****. :D

What's your occupation in real-life, just out of curiousity? :)
You accuse of me of talking nonsense but you don't offer reason why? You really have a way of articulating yourself which is less than impressive. As you have to ask I have an honours degree in computer science and work as a ruby on rails developer.

Lucky me being able to fool a company into paying me a not inconsiderable sum for the skills of a nine year old for the past 11 years...
I'm not talking about people working in IT, I'm talking about the computer enthusiasts in this forum who think they're IT experts because they are computer literate.

I've fixed a few non friends pc's and never been offered anything.

Wouldn't charge for mates though as I'd just do it as I'm watching tv or something.

Ended up fixing a neighbours pc the other week and wish I had never bothered.

Actually fixing the pc was a pain as I spent hours doing the usual anti virus scans and spyware scans to try and stop the random popups.

Then he asked if I could just wipe it so it's like new.

That was all going great until his pc decided not to read his recovery cd.

Oh and then he had forgotten his wireless details so I had to reset them using a cable.

Think I was ooh about four hours in the end sorting it out so next time he knocks I'm going to pretend I'm not in.

Can you not read? I offered about 6 posts of reasons...

And i'd rather articulate myself with a bit of passion and flair even if it means rubbing people up the wrong way than come accross like... yup... as if I shouldn't have guessed... a programmer. Bet you tear up that dancefloor. ;)

Oh great comeback. Now I have a lack of social skills? You don't know anything about me and quickly checking I see it was you who was posting here last night while I was out having friends and a social life.

Please, direct me to your posts where you explain computer literacy can't be taught in a day and there aren't nine year olds who posses it.

In your mind you have passion and flair, to others it looks like you have a limited ability to express yourself.

I got some fancy ciders the other day for doing this. I wasn't expecting anything mind as i was doing for him coz hes a good bloke and have known him for years.

If you are shocked that installing an OS and other general windows troubleshooting is outside other peoples comfort zones then you must know **** all about IT support, or never worked in that sector for any time. Seriously, you'd have to be clueless to think that. I've seen it so many times it's not even funny.

What you're effectively saying is that ANY task that is easy to the person doing it does not require any skill, and therefore payment. Well i'll tell you what, lets just stop all trades now shall we? Ludicrous logic. You're perspective on this is warped so i'll just leave it alone now and agree to disagree... because otherwise it will go around and around in circles with you repeating the same silly irrelevant points over and over again.

So you are shocked that someone cannot do what you can
You just don't get it do you?
I make my living doing this and the majority of clients I have cannot even access the BIOS screen and would be terrified to even try.
I started my own business doing this as all the friends and acquaintances computers I was fixing became ridiculous and took up so much time.
As has been pointed out it is only easy if you know how to do it. What is your field of expertise, job BTW

I know how to re-install an operating system therefore I must be an IT expert in your eyes.

Stop trying to dress up installing an operating system is something to be left to a proffessional/skilled personnel because it requires skills a normal being wouldn't have.

We're not talking about teaching your friend's gran how to install an OS, unless you have really dense friends that can't even click next, ok, and finish when prompted by a GUI, I don't know how they cope in the real world.

I've successfully explained to a girl (no offence girls) how to re-intall windows xp on her computer over the phone in less than 5 minutes, it's not because I'm a good teacher, it's because it's a **** easy job anyone with half a brain could do it. Maybe the problem here is, I don't have thick friends.

Stop dressing it up, it's easy even to a computers novice.

EDIT: Brian Stuart, your clients cannot access the bios by themselves?
Have you tried telling them to press F2/Del etc. at bootup? It's not hard. It might be daunting first time, but it's not hard.

You may not have thick friends but you do come across as a tool.
You expect everyone to be able to understand and do what you can. Have you any experience of the real world?
Reference the BIOS Yes I tell all my customers how to fix their own PC's, thats why I am going slowly out of business:rolleyes:

I expect my friends to be able to click a few buttons yes.

We're talking about friends here, not customers.
Or are friends customers now? Business really that bad?
