Learning Guitar

one thing i'd definatly recomend is buying a guitar stand early on, they can be got for £10 and means that you are always looking at your guitar, it's not hiden away on some shelf or zipped in some case, when i started to play, i had my guitar in a gig bag under my bed.... two weeks and i didn't play it... at all.... then went to argos got a stand, and really haven't put my guitar down since

I was thinking about this, and a quick check on eBay found some nice cheap ones :) Think I will grab one soon :)

A tuner would help too. :)

Why do I need a Tuner and what advantages do you get from one?

I just brought the guitar that I linked above :) Hopefully will get it on Thursday and can get the ball rolling :)

Glad to see you've got something sorted. That Washburn kit looks like it will be good to get you going, then easy enough to move on from there.

Any help with tabs or anything, just ask.

Good move going for an electric, I struggled for years with an acoustic, my playing came on leaps and bounds when I bought an electric, just wish I'd done it sooner.

When you have some spare cash, have a look at Line6 Guitarport and riffworks, I couldn't live without mine now.

that switch actually does'nt change clean to distortion, it's like a treble knob, a 3 way tone switch, to change from clean to distortion you'd need a cheap footswitch, unless you have a 3rd arm to reach the amp's distortion switch :p

I'd sugguest spending time early on learning some basic scales, minor pentatonic and major scale are both good starting points. It may sound a little dull but it'll really help your finger strength and dexterity. Plus once you can play your scales and switch between them you can start to solo and it sounds pretty cool :)

I bought an Epiphone Les Paul as my first with a Marshall 60W amp from an auction site second hand. They're still good today, but I've picked up some bad habits from being self-taught. I do suggest you get at least a couple of lessons or show someone you know who's already a good player.

I've considered learning the guitar in the past but never really pushed my self so know almost nothing.

What do you look for when buying an amp and guitar ?

How long does it take before you can play at a reasonable level ?

MW

Mr White - playing to a reasonable level is subjective and everyone learning at different speeds so it's a hard question to answer.

Mrp77 - good idea about the stands. I have a few and a couple of guitars hanging off wall hangers. I would recommend the wall hangers as then you don't bump into them but also if your guitars are pretty then it is nice but expensive piece of wall art. lol

Will keep an eye on this thread.
Got an Epiphone G310 and Peavy Vyper amp for my 40th.
Will get some lessons sorted with the same guitar teacher my son uses.
So far i can do one of the bits from Wish you were thanks to justinguitar web site.
Getting my hands and head round chords now. Got D, E and A sorted.

That is true, was kinda after a ball park figure for time taken to learn maybe a few simple songs for the average joe. Are we talking weeks, month or years ?

Nice one thanks :D

Cool I've been taking a look at some stuff on the net and have been reading how to read TABS :p I'll give them a go :)

I think I'll start with the starting kit purely because I don't want to spend as much as that on my first guitar. Gotta start small ;)

I found this...

Any thoughts?

Also... is that button next to the Gain dial the button to change to the distortion channel (Or the Dirty channel - See I'm already picking up the jargon ;))?

How good is that guitar?

Could be a couple of weeks for a beginner. I would say try and get the chords for a song sorted and then try the twiddly bits later. IE Hey Joe

Also learn Stairway to Heaven lol

Are you sure on this? Do you know where the distortion switch will be?

Ooo I'd love to have it on the wall :) Maybe when I get into it a bit more :)

Nice one :) Good luck with your lessons :)
That Justinguitar website is very good :) I can already remember E,B,G,D,A,E from:

Easter Bunny Gets Drunk After Easter :D

How good is that guitar?

I'll tell you tomorrow ;) :D

Washburn are a decent brand but are you sure that guitar is legit?

I mean what the hell are the fret markers doing ON the fretboard?

They should be along the top...

I really wish i had a chance to write a longer post but was pushed for time, this is one of the few areas where i actually know what I'm talking about and the decision you've made to go for a starting kit is a wrong one :(

Edit- I've checked it out and it is legit, you still should have got a decent squier/yamaha pacifica/low end ibanez and the amp i suggested.

I'm pretty sure the guitar will be fine for you but the amp will be horrible and your money would have been better spent on a £130 guitar rather than a £100 guitar and the amp they chuck in with it.
