After yesterdays fiasco in Pattaya, I see that a state of emergency has now been declared in Bangkok and few other provinces. Just as Songkran the water festival starts to usher in the Thai New Year. As I understand it the decree means no gatherings of more than 5 people.

Thailand about to rip itself apart I wonder?

dont worry about, they wont touch the tourists, all thais know,
f the tourists stop coming then they are stuffed.

i was there when the coup was on, a few years ago, and tourists were fine.

Great. I'm due to go there in a couple of weeks.
You'll be fine.:D

Tanks beginning to appear at various parts of the city according to Thai News... how exciting!

Good footage coming in on (Thai) channel 6 news in case anyone has access. They're showing the attack on the PM's car etc. Police standing around doing nothing, I have a feeling that stories that the PM is in the car are complete BS.

Tourists should still be safe although obviously thats not fully guaranteed. But then that depends on if certain tourists are stupid enough to get caught in the middle of the violent protests, so that would be their own fault. Besides if many tourists get harmed or even killed, not only will it damage the tourist industry of the country which is a major income source, but no doubt international and politics backlash would ensue, causing even more troubles. Its already internal, so not exactly a great idea to cause even more.

I think you're right that tourists will be safe, but I think they may well be incovenienced. As for their tourism industry it is already in a complete shambles, this is just another nail in the coffin.

Reports coming in that the red shirts have seized two armoured personnel carriers in front of Siam Paragon mall and that they are now armed with guns. Defence Minister is apparently surrounded and red shirts are trying to find him in the building in which he is hiding. No resistance from army or police so far, TV is showing red shirts mixing cordially with them.

Edit: Seems like it was tanks and not APC's http://www.thailandoutlook.tv/toc/ViewData.aspx?DataID=1013713

There's not going to be a war, as long as people don't think "Oh it'd be spiffing to go and see what all the fuss is about" and just stay out of the way there's no worries.

TV station back on air! It seems the reds now have two tanks and two APC's, not much resistance from army or police. Police marching on government house armed with tear gas at the moment. Reports of shootings by police/army on red shirts and claims that the Thai TV channels are being censored.

This link may be of interest:- http://www.manager.co.th/home/news1/550k.html It's all in Thai though.

Why arent the police etc doing anything?
edit-
I like how they are sitting on the tanks waiting for the army to come out and tell them why they brought out tanks lol.... they arent looking to pick up thai chicks in them thats for sure ;)
