£2000 car scrappage scheme

It is a stupid idea, people who run 9 year old cars do so for a reason, they are either collectible cars and therefore a hobby and not something that will be looking to be traded, or the person in question cannot afford a newer car in the first place, and the £2000 trade in might as well be 2p as it makes no difference to the afford ability of the new cars in question to these people.

In a recession where lots of people have no option but to buy cheap cars, they are going to be forced to spend way beyond their budget.

If someone has had an old mondeo for a few years, they certainly aint gonna sell it for 600 quid if they can get 2 grand for it when traded against a new car on finance.

nail on the head there

its tottaly pointless

While I'm generally against the scheme, there are a few people who will benefit from it, my mum is one such person.

She's had her Pug 307 (I think it's a 307) for about 7 years now, bought it from new, doesn't really know or care about cars except as a utility, when it was getting on to 6 years old she asked if I had any suggestions for a new car as she had no idea what to replace it wit other than another 307 as she still liked this one. I asked her why she wanted to replace it if she's happy with this one, she was concerned that it was getting old. I asked if there was anything actually faulty or dying on it and she said there wasn't and then came to the conclusion that she may as well wait a few more years.

If it makes it to 9 years, I suspect the 2 grand payout will be appealing vs dealing with the tyre kickers and time wasters that would want to visit if she stuck it on the autotrader. She's not exactly short of cash, what she is short of is time and patience (for dealing with idiots).

What a stupid idea. Why, if they are so concerned for the environment, do they think it would be more environmentally friendly to make an entire new car than to reuse an old one?

Exactly. Anyone who has read anything on the subject will be aware that manufacturing a car produces a lot of emissions, and it takes years for the reduced operating emissions of a new vehicle relative to an old one to overcome this initial 'cost'.

There have got to be better ways to stimulate the motor industry than this...

Exactly - plus in these times of financial instability, why would people look at spending a lot more than they normally would on a car?

"I know, now my £500 Mondeo is worth £2000, I'll conjure up another 7 grand from somewhere and have a brand new car. Bingo!"

No.

What makes Darling think this will prevent job losses? The people at the top will pocket the extra and continue to make cuts in the business if they think it is necessary.

And what is stopping them from keeping their 9 year old car?

They won't, but some people will - the kind of people who are looking to buy a car next year (like me) once the have more money in the bank. Now they'll need that bit less money.

This coupled with 0% interest deals are going to get more and more people into financial difficulty.

Making buying a new car seem like such a great idea is going to get people arent too good with money into a world of trouble.

Im sure a lot of people are in that sort of situation but id imagine it would be hard for them to finance a new car anyway.

My wife has a 51 reg Ford Ka that we have been saying for the last couple of years that we will get rid of it when it packs in, the problem is that despite a large dent in the front wing (some one hit it in a car park) and a large dent in the rear boot (lorry hit her at low speed in traffic) and the close to 100K miles it still goes on and on.

Id love to get rid of it and if a 2K scrappage payment came out id definitely trade it in for a new Fiesta or similar, saying that a 51 reg would be just to new wouldn't it :(

Thought id have a look on AT to see what cars i could find for between 2-5 K to see what options people with a small budjet could get, on the basis that an extra 3K would be the average spend on a "new" car. For under a year old i found plenty of Chevrolets, Kia, Hyundi also a few ford Kas, fiat panda etc. Mostly all small cars of low enginge size etc not not great of choice for a family car. I still think its an idea that could work depending on how its implemented, hasnt Japan had some rule or other for a long time about old cars being scraped when they get a certain age and thats why we get a lot of grey imports?

No, Japan just has a stupidly strict MOT that causes massive depreciation as it's so hard to make an older car pass.

An MOT failure over there would be considered to be good condition over here, hence people bring them over cheap an run them for many years afterwards.

Maybe most of you think it's a bad idea but it will help people like me. My 10 year old Focus need's replacing as it's costing a fortune to keep going now. It's regularly serviced but things have been going wrong for the past couple of years. Last year the suspension in all four corners had to be replaced, probably as a results of the appalling condition of the roads up here. That cost £869 with labour. The air con system has rotted and would cost £750 to replace. Now the central locking is playing up. If this scheme covers cars to a year old then that would be fantastic for me as i plan on getting a 6-12 month old car. The £2000 is significantly more than my Focus is worth.

Not true - my parents are a perfect example. They usually buy a car thats a year or two old and run it until it starts getting problems (usually 7 or 8 years) and start again.

They are not *interested* in cars etc, just want a fiesta or something similar that will get them from A to B and not cost a lot. This scheme is perfect for them as their current car which they want to replace is worth about £500 and they have a budget of around £5k. This scheme will give them a budget of £7k which will hopefully score them a 1 year old Fiesta instead of 2 or 3 years old.

While I don't doubt this scheme will not help many people on this forum, I think it has the potential to help a lot of people out in the real world who aren't car lovers, but merely use a car for transport and dont care... if their current run is starting to cause them hassle, they will take this offer up.

No way am i scrapping either of my 740's. They are more reliable, have less emmisions, and are cheaper to run than most modern cars anyway, so it would be pointless!
