pay day

It's not that easy. I know you live with your parents so that's a pretty easy thing for you to say, but for everyone else, easier said than done to be honest.

I don't live with my parents and haven't for quite a long time and payday is pretty much an irrellevance unless it is something unsual (i.e. bonus etc). All my purchases are on card so that gets paid off once a month just like any other bill.

I disagree. I have a mortgage, bills to pay, car to run and mouths to feed and I can manage this effectively because I budget.

Being paid on the 24th April is pretty much 5 weeks before getting paid again at the end of May on the 29th, assuming you are paid on the last Friday of the month.

Yes, this is going to suck thoroughly.

Gotta pay off holiday with this paycheque, and then I'll have a bit of money left, but being at college every day, I don't really see myself resisting Caffe Nero every day ;)

I know the feeling. I don't get paid til the 25th and due to a bad combo of events I have about £15 left til then which will go on food, I topped the car up with the rest of my remianing cash so hopefully I'll be fine.
Next month shouldn't be so bad for me as I'm should be getting best part of £100 overtime pay and loosing a few overheads, but very tight at the moment, I'm glad I have a slightly odd working pattern, as it means my petrol will last longer! Hopefully I'll make it to 2 years with my current company unless something else better comes up; all the staff who've been there 2 years or more get 2k bonuses every year the company is doing ok! Jammy sods :D

Maybe sell some of this:

Its not really even a matter of budgeting is it? The way i work my finances is that i set my current account to an arbitrary figure on the 1st of every month.

My mortgage and bills all come out a day or two later (including credit which takes all non direct debit transactions), which will then leave x in my account whatever that may be depending on the credit card payment size (this month it was a bit more, as i had 2 lots of car insurance, some road tax, and some other non monthly things).

This figure left by about the 5th of each month once all bills have been processed then gets siphoned off into a savings account which will then zero my account. I will then make money throughout the month and the current account level will rise. If the figure for the 1st is more than the set amount then that will get siphoned, if its less then i will top it up.

Should for whatever reason there be a shortfall in the arbitrary figure for the 1st then funds will travel the other way out of savings for the month to complete as normal.

I wouldnt call any of this budgeting at all, its simply managing cash flow between accounts.

Ok yeah budgeting was probably the wrong term to use - I'm really talking about properly managing money as you put well yourself.

Not a chance, I bought it all at a swan-song, and Im usually much higher on budget, its just this month I'm tight, so doesn't make much sense to sell them only to have to pay more for them in the future/not be able to get replacements, music is my major passion so I'm not getting rid of the equipment there, and I only have one PC so again not getting rid of that, as again it's a primary hobby, and replacements would cost roughly the same as what I'd sell my old kit for <all my old equipment went to family>. Not a huge amount to do around MK if you don't enjoy constant clubbing/snowboarding/shopping so doesn't make sense to sell the majority of stuff that takes up my spare time.

Surely if you have a proper budget the pay day itself is irrelevent provided it arrives on a monthly basis

i agree with you, but for some reason people dont have high overdraft and credit cards to increase flexibility....

i dont have any income, so having a budget is pretty pointless, whatever i spend i go into minus anyway

Had a bit of a spend up at the start of the month, leaving myself almost pennyless for the rest of it. Been living on beans on toast for the last two weeks. Lucky I have a fairly well off GF who has treated me a bit. I am terrible with money.

I get paid on the 15th, and I'm usually skint a few days before, but its not down to bad budgetting, in fact its quite good. I usually choose not to save money, so I spend my monthly income over the period of a month, so I run out just as more arrives. I suspect its the same for a lot of people.

I get paid tomorrow, woot! Not that I've spent all of last months wage yet though, still got at least half (though I'm paying for a holiday tomorrow).

Yup, last working day for me too. i just had one of those months where its all birthdays and stuff at once. dont know what ive done with my money. Road tax due on day im paid this month too :(

When I first started working I used to look forward to pay day because I was so reckless with my money I didnt have any left by the end of the month. Once I realised how much money I was wasting, I sorted my finances out and got everything structured (as per Jez's post) it all fell into place and I didnt have any major problems after that.
