Ok, so in the last 18months i've got about 6-7 parking tickets from the university. Since they didn't know who i was, i just threw them away and haven't paid any of them - but it seems now they have written to the DVLA to get the details of the car - registered to my father and sent him letter demanding £70 in the next 30 days.

I am under the impression that i don't have to pay, is this correct? I'm assuming that i don't just simply ignore the letter, but get my father to send back a letter saying that he wasn't the person parking on the university campus and refuse to name the person who did?

Is this correct?

Just out of interest.
Why do you feel that you're so important that you shouldn't have to obey parking instructions?

I mean, if nobody bothered then there would be chaos, most people it's nice to see do actually park within the regulations.
But for some reason you feel that such regulations are below you?

Unless you know the university in question it's hard for me to make you understand that my parking was not in any way, shape or form hindering anyone else. It was parked in a car park away from all of the colleges/lecture theatres/bars etc in a car park that is empty pretty much 24/7. Literally, no body parks in there, so i thought why shouldn't i park there? It's not like it's going to be inconveniencing anyone else?

If your fathers address is the same as your registered home address with the uni they could decide to refuse you graduation as you owe them money, most uni's do a similar thing with library fines and any halls of residence bills.

^ This, and the Uni is well within their rights to do so. Not really worth £70 in my opinion

Hi, yeah it is the same address, but the way i see it, just because i go to the same uni as where the ticket is issued, doesn't qualify as "proof". Sure, it's strong circumstantial evidence, but by no means conclusion.

For instance, it could have been my mother who drove down to Kent and parked there when she came and saw me? So IMO, they can't prove it was me that was driving, hence cannot put the £70 fine onto my student fee. The only reason why they can do it with the library fine etc is because it is 100% certain that i have checked out a book and not returned it.

My mates used to rack up tickets at uni all the time and never paid, didn't stop them graduating.

One of them even went in to the reception and was like..."yea I'm not paying this" and the they just said OK and took it off his record. I guess not all Uni's will be that relaxed about it though

Yeh, a lot of my other mates have got 4-5 parking tickets too, but they haven't got any letters from the uni. Maybe i was considered a "serial offender" :o

Where abouts have you been parking then? Sports fields? parkwood?

The uni is quite harsh these days, back in my first year there was lots of parking on campus for students. alas no more.

Around the back of the Business buildings (in the small car park with the barrier that's always open) and parkwood.

That's completely evading the point though.

If there is a sign up saying you need to pay and display or display a permit... then you need to do that.

Whether the car park is empty or not is completely irrelevant!!!

Are you the **** that keeps parking in front of my bike shed making it difficult to get out?

if you haven't graduated yet remember it could be handled internally at the university as well, similar to library fines etc
