Prime running 8 threads is an absolute ***** with the i7's!! Gets it v v toasty, a good 20-25c higher than with just games :D

So an excellent stress tester, along with Linx using big mem :cool:

I've got mine to 4GHz but when I started running Prime the temps were ridiculously high...reaching 100 at one point so I stopped after 5min...also whats this turbo I hear you lot talking about? where do I turn this on and how can I get my multiplier to go up from 20 cos it dont seem to want to budge any higher than 20? Also please check out my other post in General Hardware where I hit a stumbling block with my RAM.

Thanks all :)

inside your bios go to AI Tweak and you should see the turbo setting in there.
Just Enable it.

The go right, into Advanced, CPU Configuration and make sure it's enabled in there also.

result = Multi @ x21 = 4.2ghz :cool:

here's a screen shot i found

4.2 Ghz, happy at this, could go a lot further i think. But i am gonna stick with 4.2 and find my minimum stable volts.

Now 4.2(21 X 200) @ 1.2V, 4 hours prime stable.

I dont have HT enabled. If intel would like to include an option to emulate sex wiith kelly brook, i'll be sure to enable it. But to emulate 4 processing cores that dont exist, increase temps by up to 20%, and so reduce my cpus life expectancy tenfold, and all to run imaginary multithreaded apps seems pointless.

HT on P4s was a worthwhile addition as multitasking became almost possible. With 4 cores at 4.2ghz, well, I think i'll stick with that and try to attain my minimum volts requirement.

You may as well have a q6600 then
An i7 without HT is a massive waste
It's the whole point of the chip!
Reducing the life of the chip? Where did you get that wonderful piece of misinformation?

Higher temps = shorter life. HT adds 12 deg. Simples.

Tell me, If you truly believe temperature plays no part in the death of electronic components, WTF are you using a water cooling loop for ? Why do intel supply HSFs? How do scythe stay in buisness? And thermaltake, how the hell did they grow so huge ?

My wonderful pieces of information seem to have built many many multibillion dollar empires.

seriously when will you be running your i7 @ 80+ deg 100% all the time?
Answer = Never.

And the point with a D0 is it reduces voltage to maintain life of these chips. In comparison to the normal C0 chips you've gained massively. C0

Temps are similar but @ lower clocks with the C0's yet it's not ruining them.

I think your crazy to buy an i7 then not turn HT on :S

Suit yaself I guess but might as well have stuck with core 2.

Higher temps = shorter life.

Your right, but it is all relative. HT does increase performance and like the above user said it's not like your going to be at prime temps 24/7 and why would you bother overclocking when your not using one of the best features of the chip.
