Arch Enemy

listened to them in the past (older album) but got bored after a while and moved onto something else, may give them another try in a while but quite liking my j-rock at the moment :o.

Can't remember why I got bored, it might have been a bit oldschool the album I had. Also I think I found cadaveria (think female cradle of filfth) which was more to my taste at the time.

Seems you're dipping a little more heavily into the metal arena now Spie :D
If you don't mind male vocalists, try out early In Flames/Dark Tranquility, might also be worth giving a try of some Dimmu Borgir (symphonic black metal nowadays) a try for variety, thier song 'The Serpentine Offering' has a similar sound, plus you don't seem adverse to growl vocals. [I'd link but I've no idea how to do youtube embeds on this forum!]

I don't mind Arch Enemy, but they're one of those bands I've never got round to 'getting into', and haven't listened to as much of thier collection as I should, Angela Gossow definately has a surprising voice if you look at a picture of her; most of my friends thought she was a guy when first hearing her music!

Good to see someone else willing to try anything :)

Can't stand that style of vocals anymore, although I never liked them to begin with.

'Melodic' Death Metal doesn't really do it for me, all sounds the same for the most part.

Who likes them?

Good/bad points?

Quite enjoying them at the moment

You're consistently surprising me. First Evanescence, fair enough, but now Arch Enemy? I've been working as a journalist in the field of female-fronted metal since 2003, so this area is closely related to my interests.

Good points - Angela's Vocals are good, she's attractive. That's about it.
Bad points - it's pretty standard and uninventive stuff as far as melodic death metal goes.

The very best melodic death metal albums you can find, in my opinion, come from the male-fronted side and would be:

At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
In Flames - The Jester Race
Edge of Sanity - Crimson [possibly the best melodic death album made, in my opinion]

If you are moving into melodic death, the only way to go is male-fronted. Bands like Cadaveria and Arch Enemy are poor imitations of stuff at the high end. I'd also mainly concentrate on melodic death made in the 1990s since the stuff made since around 2000 is quite clichéd and overproduced.

EDIT: If you really want to check out some more female death vocals, I'd recommend listening to Decadence's album The 3rd Stage of Decay.

Angela Gossow is an amazing vocalist, shocked me to find out it was a woman doing vocals for Arch Enemy!

In terms of similar music though, Colony and Clayman are fantastic IF albums, Come Clarity is different but I still massively enjoyed it. The rest are quite meh post Clayman.

Dark Tranquillity are excellent, easily my favourite band since the moment I first heard their music. Their stuff continues to get better and better. Wintersun is another band you might enjoy as well, and you might like to give DevilDriver a shot too.

Can anyone remind me, there's one particular In Flames song I utterly love, it's pretty overplayed and has an amazingly catchy chorus, but that's the best explanation I can give! :( My YouTube skills are failing.. the search continues!

It's likely Come Clarity, Take This Life or Only for the Weak if its been played recently. Only For The Weak is one of my favourite tracks from them.

awww in flames :D

so many songs that I love and want to mention.
Evil in a closet, the Quiet place, Take this life :D
love them.

Arch Enemy - i prefer their older albums, rise of the tyrant wasn't that impressive, but I have to be in the right mood for them!
We will rise and End of the Line are fantastic though :D

In Flames will always be one of the best bands out there. Unless they go Country or something.

I lost interest in Arch Enemy quite some years ago....my need to revisit as they are a good band, both before and with Gossow.

I'd recommend listening to some Soilwork, Spie. Get your hands of the albums "A Predator's Portrait" and "Stabbing the Drama". Awesome metal albums those two.
