Best matt looks hair gel/clay/putty/fibre whatever.

KMS.

I used to use Fish but they kept changing their packaging and I could never find the one I wanted. I got some free samples of KMS which lasted ages and I love it.

Expensive but very good.

When my hair was at a manageable length i used to throw some manga gel at it. Its pretty good stuff as its rock solid. For longer hair (5/6 inches) i used the L'Oreal Fibre Paste. The one problem i had though was that all the fibre stuff is very messy and leaves your hair feeling sticky. Ive tried various types and because my hair is so thick it takes a lot to control when it gets a bit long. My solution to cure all this was simple.....a pair of clippers. Its brilliant to not have to worry about doing up my hair on a morning. Number 1 all over, works a treat. Saves money too.

+1

I have used the Mint Citrus putty and the D:fi putty (both made by American Crew) and they are awesome. The mint citrus stuff smells good enough to eat too :)

By far the best thing I have ever used is soap, colourless unscented soap, it hold so much better than anything else I have ever tried and washes out easily when you want it out.

Best thing is you can get the soap for something like £1.50 for two or three bars and it'll easyily last you for 6 months or more!!!

Next best holding product is vaseline...though getting it out of your hair afterwards is a total nightmare!!!

What's going on usually there would be posts full of "gayer/homo/fag/poofter" etc
Now it's like everyone uses hair styling products.

I think they changed their whole range, and got rid of the one that did an amazing job on my hair. :(

Brylcreem Re-Styler does a fairly good job on my hair.

Personally (after trying just about everything) I'm kind of liking
loreal dirty clean which gives (in my view) a matt, semi clumped, semi spikey look and works pretty well upto about 3-4" length. Any longer than that and I use loreal remix although this is really sticky and is a pain to wash off your hands.
I have really fine hair if that makes a difference to the op too.

When I tried the fructis manga head I found it can work well but got to be done at just the right time after drying the hair as it really didn'r like my hair being too dry or too wet.
