Sugar is apparently a 'bomb ingredient'. You couldn't make this stuff up...

Terror plot cops find 'bomb part'

COPS searching the homes of 11 terror suspects have seized bags of sugar — a common ingredient in home-made bombs.

Sugar can be mixed with chemicals to create an explosive for use in bombs and grenades.

Scientists were last night analysing it to determine if it was a secret bomb ingredient.

Eleven men — aged between 22 and 41 — are still being quizzed by anti-terror officers.

They were rounded up in a series of raids across Manchester, Liverpool and Clitheroe, Lancs, last Wednesday.

Security sources believe they thwarted an “imminent” attack planned for the Easter holiday.

Ten of the 11 suspects are Pakistanis in Britain on student visas. The other is British.

The sugar was taken from a house in Cheetham Hill, Manchester.

Just when I thought they'd run out of ideas to link household items to terrorism... mind you, with the IQ of the average Sun reader some people would swallow this ****.

depends doesn't it, a bag japati flour is perfectly fine as is sugar however if someone has 200lbs of the stuff there might be a reason other than they like sweet tea.

Sugar can be an ingredient in some bombs... Mind you, unless you've got bags of the stuff I think it's a bit of a leap to bomb making.

If its possible to use it in an explosive and one of the houses contain a huge stockpile of it then its a good guess it wasn't for baking with

Old news. I was making weedkiller and sugar bombs when I was a spotty teenager. Do fathers not teach their kids this stuff these days or something?

Well tbf if someone is keeping a tonne of sugar in a 2 bedroom terraced house then questions need to be asked.

However:

:D

They're clutching at straws because the criminal incompetence of their boss forced them to make the arrests before they had gathered any hard evidence. So they're going to try every trick in the book to get them charged, or at least find excuses to hold them a little longer.

You can actually use it to make rocket propellant. Search for it on youtube, there is quite a bunch of people that do it for fun.

Or don't, if you're worried MI5 might notice...

Shouldnt they be more bothered if they had 500 bottles of toilet duck. or buckets of salt peter, sulphur and charcoal lieing around?

If im correct then sugar can be used in bomb making but only for making the smoke in smoke bombs when heated with salt peter (potassium nitrate) or sodium chlorate (weed killer)

I tried the latter (heating weed killer and sugar) when i was younger but i couldnt be bothered to wait so turned up the heat too high. que my mum n dads kitchen work surfaces being covered in a shower of molten sugar!!

Look at the picture and tell me a few small bags of sugar on their own = a bomb.

Then again, you can't tell that's all they found. There might be a few tonne bags inside the door that they can't get out for all we know.

how do you know they're on their own? what if they where found in a room with weed killer/other ingredients well away from the kitchen?

Unless you have some inside info on the case then you're the one grasping at straws here.

yup, even small amounts of sugar can make a decently effective bomb. When I was a kid I used to have a paper cut out of how to make a bomb. This was when the world was relatively normal.

Aah yes I remember this. Idiot at the top makes an error, suspects are brought in early and a big fuss is made. They find sod all, and I read yesterday that they're being released since there's no evidence to hold them. Mid section of the newspaper.
