Bank of Essex

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Essex is worse than a developing country, etc.

I'm just simply saying I don't like it here. The pace of life, the attitude, the heavily built up areas, noise and pollution, and the subcultures are crap.

I hate London because it's a ****-hole. Essex, like Surrey and parts of Sussex is simply a place for people chasing their wage to commute from.

I don't agree with their philosophies and I really don't agree with the conceited attitude they bring home with them that spreads like the plague.

I can't argue with that Nix, Chelmsford as a town has gone though many changes over the last 10 years, some for the better but some not so. Most of the building work and new residents are in mind with those from London, seeking to pay off their mortgages and settle within a rural area and commute. This has forced local house prices up (in the past) and sicially worse off. That said, I love the village I live in and don't intend to move.

So, which wonderful area do you live in? In my view you are the one who is coming across as conceited. I live in Billericay and work in London and have also been to a fair few places myself. I just wondered where this "oasis of utopia" you are so fortunate to live in? Every place has it's good and bad and there's a lot worse places than Essex.

Now tell me you would still enjoy the county if you lived in Basildon, Benfleet, Canvey, Southend, Shoeburyness, etc.

I lived in Basildon as a kid, it wasn't that bad, had a happy enough childhood and still go there for the cinema and to see friends. Doubt I'd ever consider living there again though.

And you're right, I'm very grateful I don't live on Canvey, Southend or Grays!

I make no secrets about where I live. I'm in the wonderful ghetto that is Southend.

Everyone is different. I happen to be the opposite of those who want to climb the ladder and **** on people in the process. I'm more content in stopping and smelling the roses. I don't live in any utopia, I'm in the middle of my own little comedy. The little good there is here doesn't make up for half the crap I put up with.

You may see things differently, but that doesn't change how I see things. I have my own experiences, intelligence and cognition to draw upon and I really doubt you've spent anywhere as near as I have musing over these things.

Yeah, that's probably because I have a busy life and don't have as many "opportunities" as you do. Maybe I'll do some navel gazing just like you when I retire.

You seem to be making Southend out like its Beruit here. Having lived in Southend myself, I agree its not the nicest place on the planet, but it isnt awful either. Ok, so on a friday night the seafront is full of boy racers and people out on the lash, that is certainly an annoyance, but you'll find that in any major town I think.

I spent 21 years growing up in the East End of London, and I wouldnt go back to that for a million pound. An area is what you make of it, where I lived now (Crawley, West Sussex) is widely regarded as a ****-hole, and I can certainly see why.

But I have a nice house, I have good neighbours, and in the 2 years that I've been here the only trouble I've had has been from a group of travellers, and even that was pretty minor.

Perhaps you should start looking for the good in things, instead of just the bad.

To be fair, I don't think you'd be happy wherever you lived. You seem very negative based on previous posts I have witnessed over the years.

In my experience Essex has been great for me, there are good and bad areas. I honestly wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Perhaps you are just unlucky or are permanently miserable? ;)

Hah, you say it like it's something to be ashamed of.

I know it's not possible for everyone due to life commitments like children, etc. but it isn't hard just to take some time out in the week to take things at your own pace.

You'll have a lot of time to gaze when you retire, sure. I wonder if that's why they call them the golden years, eh? The young child's toys and the old man's reasons, and all that. Why wait till you retire? Go for a walk in the park during your lunchbreak, and keep your eyes open and your brain turned on. Who knows, you might even start to see things in an interesting light.

I'm not permanently miserable. Just recently, I've been pulling myself out of a very dark place which unless you were Neitzsche I wouldn't wish upon you.

I'm not always miserable, I just have very little to be joyful about at the moment so I'm exercising that wonderful British quality of complaining. Oh, how dare I. Unless you've read all of my posts, I'm just going to brush that comment off. The majority of the time I like posting to try and bring smiles to others because that's what makes me smile in turn.

Cynics are only ever idealists at heart. The world is crap, look around you. It shouldn't nor should it be the way it is, yet there you go.

Anyone who tells you things are wonderful is delirious, or a spy for Disney.

There are places I would love to live, but I'm just going to have to wait my turn before I can get there. :p

Southend though? Hah. It's an old Victorian seaside town - a day out for Londoners - that's dying a slow death. It doesn't know if it wants to be traditional resort or just an extension of East London, so it's gone for the bastardised conclusion of both. Wonderful.

Perhaps you should start looking for the good in things, instead of just the bad.

Oh I do, don't jump to conclusions. But when you look for the good time and time again, only to have the bad jump out and assault your senses, it becomes a little dejecting. As I said earlier, there is good here but there isn't enough to make up for the bad. But maybe that's because I can actually see the bad rather than pretending it isn't there, eh?

Too many snobs, nothing wrong with essex at all. Romford is a decent place to live.

Hmm, wouldn't really say that but it has gotten better over the last 10 years or so since they redeveloped the central shopping area, but I wouldn't feel that safe round there at night still.

I spent a few years living in Chadwell Heath when I was growing up, can't say I have fond memories of it, these days its basically had the high road turned into a takeaway paradise, the only reason I ever go back there is because my grandmother refuses to live anywhere else.

I've lived in Kenya, near Bristol and now near Warwick in the Midlands and have to say this is much nicer than the Romford area.

Cant say I've travelled round much of the rest of Essex though so I'm sure there are nicer areas.

Thankfully I've grown out of my Essex accent which is probably the worst part of Essex.
