Well, I've got it now.....

I agree with what you've said above, enjoy it! There are always lots of jealous people and know-it-alls who'll tell you you're stupid on the internet.

Well he hasn't been stupid, but a little misguided! It isn't a performance car, and at an average of 18mpg (which is less than I got with an A8 4.2 Quattro), it will cost an utter fortune to run. If it isn't too late, cancel is and get something else!

That may be the case, but it's his decision, his mistake (if he sees it that way), though he may be fine with those things. I agree with what he said, he wanted it, and life's too short really. He might regret it eventually, but that's a lesson learned.

Perhaps should have asked the advice of people on here first.

Hi, I'm an RX8 and I'm a petrolaholic! :D

Seriously though, well done, I realy RELY wanted one so much but in the end couldn't justify the unning costs, which is a real shame, beautiful cars, i love the interior, nice back seats for what it is, "unique" looks and a car I just fell in love with but ended up being realistic about not really wanting to be shelling out nearly £40-50 a week to cmmute 100 miles a week and then 50 or so at the weekend!

Winning blue looks gorgeous, hope you enjoy it mate, just don't forget the oil! ;)

(I'm going to eat those words aren't I)

You've made an impulse purchase and didnt thoroughly researched your purchase. Simply posting on here "whats fuel like on an RX8" would have yielded the information as quickly as it did today. Similar, asking if the 192bhp version or the 230bhp version was best, would also have yielded the same info quickly.

You said yourself, this is your first proper car with some power, so you're bound to like it.

I just hope you learn from your experience, and you dont have too much trouble shifting it when you decide to move on.

From what I have heard, you can't really 'feel' the power in them. And you have thrash them to really extract the speed that it does have.

They look nice though, I like them. I just think the whole package is spoiled by the engine :D ...which I guess is entirely the point for many people that purchase them.

Nice, looking forward to the pics. I have always liked the RX8s despite its high running costs, you'll have to give us a full review ;)

Can someone help me explain the point of the W.ankel* engine? I mean, from what I understand, their major claim is that they produce a lot of power from a very small (1.3 litre) displacement. But, surely the major reason for reducing displacement is to increase fuel efficiency; but the engine in the RX8 is not only horrendously inefficient from what I hear, but it drinks oil nearly as fast as it drinks petrol.

So why bother (technical experiment aside)? Why not just go for a larger traditional ICE which is more efficient, robust and bigger? This isn't an attack on your car, I think the RX8 is really nice, but I am genuinely a bit confused about the engine choice for the car.

Anyway, aside from that, nice car. Hope you have fun.

*edited to avoid over-enthusiastic board censor :/

The rotary is used because of it's low weight and compact size. Helps with the balance of the car. The high rev nature of it just so happens to be fitting with a fun sports car too.

The Rotary engine has always been crap with economy. The small size and weight is an advantage as it helps with the balance of the car.

Thanks for all the comments. Lol I had no idea the RX8 could command so much and such diverse emotion :D I did not go into this with my eyes closed, far from it. I've been reading about them since they came out so I was aware of the negatives. I'm also aware of the positives and thats life for me summed up in a car. Ups and downs. Now, all i need to do is fins a roof rack to mount my Kona :D I've got a mont blanc carrier, just need the bars. Got a steer from google so should not be too hard.

but never bothered to ask us

should we consider ourselves snubbed ;) And you cant have been fully aware of the negatives, you thought you could get similar MPG to your 2.0 mondeo !

Yeah I suppose. The whole RX8 package doesn't really make much sense though to me. The engine was born out of a 'no compromise' type philosophy, to make a pure sports car. The RX7 fit the bill to a large extent but with the RX8 it has this no compromise engine but the rest of the car is totally compromised for practicality.
They should release a new RX7, like the old one but with more power to keep with the times. 400+bhp rotary would be awesome.

I think this is what I find hard to understand....it struck me as a bit big for an out and out sports car, with four seats too, which kind of doesn't seem to fit with the light, small, revvy engine.
