Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has lent his backing to keeper Manuel Almunia's potential claim to play for England.

The Spaniard joined the Gunners in July 2004, and under residency laws, will be eligible to apply for British citizenship this summer.

And that would enable the 31-year-old, who has never represented Spain, to play for England under Fabio Capello.

I personally think it might be a good idea to let him have a go.

He is a pretty good shot stopper, and with calamity james getting old, i don't see foster, green, robinson, and carson being ample replacments.

Your thoughts ?

He's the best available, but I'm not sure if he'll be chosen. He has been Arsenal's best player this season (him and Gallas), and possibly the most consistant keeper in the league. Seems like a good choice to me

EDIT - I just read that Redknapp thinks David James is a better keeper than Almunia, excellent :D

Never going to happen, same rubbish was touted when Cuducini had been here long enough, and if he's not good enough to get in the Spainsh squad I wouldn't want him in the England squad:)

Almunia has come on so much since joining Arsenal, and has been fantastic this year for us, my POTY.

He would be very good for England, but saldy it just won't happen.

I'll be the first to say it, Im just not comfortable with a foreign lad playing for England, its bad enough having a foreign manager:p

Mind I think its happened before with the likes of Dorigo and Barnes etc, I wouldnt have a problem with some who was born abroad but grew up here from a young age, but someone who moved here as a 'grown' adult, just doesnt sit right with me.

lol, you have to laugh at the age and spanish 3rd choice arguments. Lets put it this way if David james was Spanish he'd be their 10th choice keeper. Almunia is far better than James, but lets not do the usual english thing and pretend any single idea will suddenly turn us into cup winners. Buffon could move to england, change his name legally to David James, have plastic Surgery, get a dodgey haircut now and then and play for us in goal, we'd still win nothing.

It would be a far more interesting idea if we had a remotely competitive squad that wasn't full of playboy idiots who couldn't care less about winning and only like the paycheck. AS it is, let him play, he's a good guy, professional, isn't out gang banging, raping, drink driving, drunken fighting, gambling all his money away or doing anything else so he can only improve the teams image and lead to some less embarassing performances.

Its yet another England manager whose using the ridiculous english press by getting them completely focused on one idea so no one notices we're crap. He'll probably not choose Almunia due to "public outrage" then when we get knocked out say blame the current keeper for a mistake/poor performance.
