Oh, some assembly IS required.
As in everything.
Including all the SMD components, electronics, cables etc.

As far as i know, its used for prototyping pretty much every new product these days.
Also can be used in hospitals to construct models from various scanners etc. Archeologists also use them.

And of course they can be used to make art also.

Have you looked at the home brew ones using a modified inkjet printer?

You replace the ink with water, then it lays that down onto plaster powder. The head goes back and a new layer of plaster is applied. Print head prints the next layer so on so forth.

I have seen a few of these DIY "reprap" machines now, none can yet match the commercial 3D printers.

I am interested in what you will be making with it. I built my own 3 axis CNC, which also does 3d milling.

I've seen one of these working before at the Dyson factory, pretty cool pieces of kit. The things they can make with it are really impressive, they had all sorts of random shapes lying around that they'd made for fun. As has already been mentioned they build all prototypes with one of these before building a working one.

Our 3d printer cost £50,000 + another 15K in additional parts, computers, materials, installation and insurance.
