ATI Radeon 5870 and 5870X2 specs revealed?

Havent you been in a sort of disappointed graphics card cycle since the 8800 series with G92 loadsa :D

I'd of thought you would be used to it by now and reduced your expectations.

It started with the 2900 as i recall as at the time i was waiting for it as well and i think the re naming just made it worst for a few people.

I dont think the new gen cards will be released until end of October/beginning of November, as by the time the cards are out Xmas will be close, which is when they will probably sell a lot of cards due to the festive period, count me in ;)

You will probably get away with skipping this gen and waiting for the next before you need to consider upgrading to the latest and greatest card available

The numbers don't seem overly impressive to me... texture and pixel fillrate catches up the current 280/285 cards ballpark, peak GFlops is pushed to a theoretical 2160 which is nice but rumours are that the new high end nVidia parts will be capable of around 3500, both numbers being pretty meaningless as far as gaming goes anyhow as ATI's is a theoretical peak and nVidias takes into account functionality beyond what can really be applied to gaming.

Which is why i said oh dear, doesn't sound to impressive to me either, i just thought we'd get another card coming like the 8800 seen as were going to the next step in Dx, like we did then going from 9 to 10, but still, as they say its all just rumours, so lets wait and see.

Although i guess the jump may not be that big as the timeframe from 10 to 11 is a lot less than the timeframe from 9 to 10, as 10's not long been out and 11's coming already.

I think we will all just have to wait until review sites get a pre-release card, and from there we will all see what a jump in games the card will have for both Nvidia & ATI, and then from there we will know if the new cards are worth it, or not....

Well if rumours are true nvidia isn't going to have a card to compete against the Ati 5xxx till next year which would mean any card they release will be competing against a 5xxx refresh.

Rooting for nvidia to win doesn't make much sense as we saw with the launch of the 280, if AMD hadn't shocked everyone we'd still be paying £400 for 65nm.

TBH reading this Graphics card forum I almost get the impression some would happily pay over the odds just so they could firmly say "I have the fastest graphics card, period."

Well if ATI manage to get the cards out before the end of the year, they will have the performance crown, and will be the best cards to order, Nvidia will lose a huge chunk of money with nothing to match the performance of the DX11 cards

Yeah, holiday time people seem to spend more on hardware so both company's need their new cards out.

To be honest watercooling your GFX is not really worth it, as its very difficult to do that with these dual PCB cards and people thinking of SLI. As long as you got a good gaming case fan such as the Antec 1200, you will do fine on air cooling

From what i have gathered, the 5870 is going to be 60% quicker than a 4870 and 40% quicker than a 4890.

5870x2 probably will be just over double a 4870x2.. seems like a pretty decent boost in performance, 5870 will probably be the card to run crysis well for anybody interested, i dont care about it tbh :p

Why would the the X2 variant be twice as fast as the 4870X2 when you say the 5870 will only be 60% faster than the 4870?

As for Crysis, I think I have come to hate the game. I used to enjoy running around the jungle, but the game inconsistent performance just annoys me these days. Will be uninstalling that and Warhead and may re-install them some years down the line - or just get a console version :)
