Focus nearly stalling when slowing down and dipping clutch

I had a problem with my 98 focus, kept cutting out. Couple of trips to the garage and they had no idea, thanks to ffoc.co.uk I think it turned out to be the speed sensor, never had the problem again after that.

Why are garages so utterly useless at diagnosing faults? Anyone I know that's been to a garage has had to go back three or four times to get a simple thing fixed.

It may be my speed sensor but I dont have the speedo cutting on which is related to this. Im on ffoc myself and they came up with simular answers

Similar happened with my mondeo, finally it gave up and I broke down! Turned out to be the alternator packing in & the battery going flat. Was quite a scary moment as everything just died, in the end the battery was that flat the hazards wouldnt work and was stuck down a country lane at night!

Not saying it is this, but could be a possibility.

Ive cleaned my MAF sensor over the weekend and its not done it again. Its not perfect it does drop a little bit but not enought to stall or have the battery light come on. So fingers crossed

Hi Peter, how's your focus doing now? I've got an '03, 1.8 MP3 as well with exactly the same symptoms  if it is just the MAF sensor then I'm up for trying it on mine to save the garage abusing me...! Cheers

Hi mate. Ive changed all sorts, TPS, MAF cleaned this that and everything and its still there. Ive just given up and going to live with it a think. Just use a bit of "heel & toe". Out of interest do you have an aftermarket exhaust on yours at all?

Ah poo :( no factory standard exhaust on mine..

I really don't want to take it to the garage as I could put money on them charging me loads and not fixing anything... Thanks for the help though Peter - if you ever find out what it is please let me know!! Cheers

Hi Peter,

Some good news - took my Focus to the local Ford garage and had the engine CPU reprogrammed, turns out the version of firmware which was on my car (and maybe yours too by the sounds of things) has a known bug which results in the eratic idle we've both experienced... That was nearly a month ago and it's not over-revved or stalled on me once since, touch wood/fingers crossed!!!

If you decide to get this done I really hope it helps you mate as it sounds like you've tried nearly everything else.. Let me know how you get on :)

Cheers, Rich
