UK Kindle - when?

I've been holding off buying a Sony 505 to see if the 700 or the Kindle ever make it to these shores.

iPhone + stanza is pretty satisfactory for me.

Wouldn't like to carry around another piece of kit if existing hardware can already carry out that task.

If you're reading a long book, e-ink is miles better than an iPhone.

Most definitely, but I have read quite a few books on my iPhone via stanza, I would value the conveniance of having one device, although obviously e-ink is less strain on your eyes, and drains considerably less battery.

I saw one of the Sony models in the Sony store in town the other day. When I first looked at it, I could have sworn it was just a dummy unit with one of those pretend screen stickers on them, it just didn't look real. It was only when I pressed a button and the page turned that I realised it was an actual working model. I was stunned, it looked incredibly good and was extremely easy to read the text. Very impressive.

Then again the OP wasn't asking about the iPhone which many people don't want :p

I think the problem is the connectivity. It has a 3G connection so you can download books from anywhere and that's the issue. From what I understand, Orange are considering them in France which I hope will increase our chances of getting them here.

I'd love one and would buy one tomorrow if they were available in the UK.

Seconded. I have the money just waiting for Amazon to release the Kindle over here. HURRY UP AMAZON.

Oh and yes the WhisperNet part of the Kindle is what is causing issues.

I don't think these electronic book type devices are good enough yet. Perhaps in a few years. I wouldn't mind one jam packed with technical documents though so I don't have to treak half way around the building a work to remember how some obscure function in a language I hardly use works!

Very nice, I'd seriously consider getting one of these if the store had more books to purchase, just did a few searches and it's missing a bunch that I'd like to get but I'm definitely going to be keeping my eye on it.

It's quite simple really none of them felt easy on the eye, I felt I was always straining a little when I was using them. None I've seen present technical (physics / maths textbooks) books well either. For me at the moment they'd be a more of an emergency device to use (I.e. when I couldn't get access to the book in traditional form).

How recently was that?

The new model that's just been announced should be a lot better because the screen is much larger, it's been made specifically to be able to present that sort of book in a more usable way.

The more I look at this the more I want one, would be a great way of saving some space as I have books everywhere!

It was only a week or so ago in a Sony shop. The problem with them making a bigger one is that it'll probably be more expensive? and at the same time if it's getting pretty large then you just think I'll take my laptop instead.

Just IMO

I saw one in a Sony shop in Vegas in november and I had the same reaction as TheVoice, it pretty impressive. I have to agree with dangerstat to an extent though, although they look good for novels it's going to be a while yet (when they start being able to display detailed diagrams in journal papers) before I contemplate getting one. When they do it would be brilliant for scientists, being able to take just a small thin device into the field/lab using papers on it as references.

Isn't there a major problem with the Kindle that you can only read books you purchase through Amazon? At least that was what I remember from the original one.

The 700 isn't really worth it, the extra screen layers they put on to add the light and touchscreen hamper the readability.
I've had a 505 for about 18 months now, amazing device, people who suggest a laptop/palmtop/iphone instead clearly haven't used one, until you do you can't appreciate how much like reading a normal book it is, especially in high lit areas like outdoors. The battery life is also unparalleled compared to the suggested alternatives.
