Leaked Duke Nukem gameplay

Must have been an awesome 12 years for the employees though, working for over a decade without deadlines or anything. 3D realms is probably a grand example of "when its done" being a stupid philosophy in game development, but kudos to them for actually sticking with it to the death. Every other developer that has ever uttered it has invariably caved in at some point to the "this will do - patch later depending on success" stance.

I think there have been some successes with the "when it's done" philosophy, such as with Blizzard. There are a few more but I can't think of any right now. But 3DR really took the pee with that philosophy.

dont know much about the DN series, just used to play it sometimes when i was younger on the ps1, made me lol. looks good, a shame its not coming out, or maybe it wil..................under a new company or something.

Blizzard also go with the "this will do", even more so due to the nature of their tri-monthly major content patches which also will then need a set of patches from then to fix the new stuff, hardly gets done does it?... nobody but 3D Realms have ever truly stuck to "when its done", and they died with it.

Damn, thats a real shame :( Some of that looked really good, and really 'Duke'... the bit where the pig cop shuts his friend in the metal door for example.

I really hope it was 90% done and someone does the last 10% polishing up and releases it, because even if not great, after all this time of testing, tweaking and playtesting the beta code they have is probably better than half the generic crud coming out these days.

That version didn't look too bad either, and it looked like that was a console version (left trigger prompt at one point) so the PC version could have been quite good.

Im not saying it should have been out within 10 years, rather than bankrupt after 12 though!

Fail 1 - Those aren't Pig-Cops. They are pigs in trousers like Rat Ogres from Warhammer.
Fail 2 - Why is his body glistening in the opening part like someone has covered him in baby oil? Bad use of lighting.

Still I am upset it will not be released, but in fairness a developer that spends 12 years on a game, changes the engine numerous times and never releases anything deserves to go bust, no matter how well they do the female bodies (hehehe boobies).

12 years for that?

What a waste of time, the people who worked on this must have been lazy git's using it as an excuse to stay in a job and do crap all for 12 years.

That looks pretty good to me.....who gets the IP now? They'd be mad not to release it, but then I guess it depends how much more work really needs to be done.

I can only speculate, but it was most likely a badly managed project, lacking in direction, with a lot of wasted work, resulting in frustrated and miserable staff, who then end up leaving.

Can you imagine the interview?

Interviewer: So what was the last project you worked on?
Applicant: Duke Nukem Forever
Interviewer: And how long did you work on this project for?
Applicant: About 12 years
Interviewer: Wow, must have been a pretty ambitious project. Must have looked great when it was finished.
Applicant: Yea...... about that....

LOL!!!

Just thinking about all this Duke Nukem stuff which has basically exploded across the net, could it all be some big charade intended to drum up hype for the game which is actually, after all this time, finished?

It's not wishful thinking as I've never played the original games, just pondering whether a company could play along with something like this to increase puplicity.
