BARCELONA Grand Prix 2009 - Race 5/17

Its one person, who cares really? You can't take a gp off a country because of one or two idiots. As DC said how can you stop one idiot coming through the gates and then blackening his face up.

You can have the stewards remove him from the ground and hand him over to police. Or generally act like you take racist abuse seriously. The problem is not the particular morons involved its the systemic failure of the authorities to take it seriously and act with appopriate force that's the problem.

Don't watch it then.

i probably won't. Unless it gets competitive again. Last season was brilliant. A proper championship battle and even BMW were getting the odd win and were comptetive e.t.c. This season just looks like a snore fest with 12 more proccesions around a track to see button and brawn get the title.

If it aint broke , don't fix it!

Are you serious?! THis season is the most exciting so far for quite a few years!

Personally I think in the last 2 races Jenson has been very fortunate that first a toyota and then a redbull has not found clear air in the strategy.

Yep, there's no way he's (or Brawn in general are) going to win 80% of the remaining races. Their large advantage out of the box is now essentially gone and we have to expect other teams (especially Ferrari and Red Bull when they get the double diffuser) to develop the car faster during the season.

Thing is, with a 14 point lead over RB and 18 over SV and 12 races to go even at this early stage it'll hard for others to overhaul him. For example if Jenson didn't win another race (highly unlikely) and just came 2nd for the rest of the season, there's would only be 24 points (relative to Jenson) up for grabs.

5 wins is enough to win a championship. 5 wins with 12 races to go makes it a virtual certainty. The bookies have Jenson 8/13 to win the championship (3/1 SV, 12/1 RB, 12/1 LH, 14/1, FM).

IMO 2007 and 2008 were far more exciting simply because the rivalry at the top was far far more cut throat and it was fun to watch.

I think that this year has seen MUCH closer racing than previous years. Overtaking around the outside of corners, cars swapping positions around 3 to 4 corners in a row etc

Last year was generally a procession apart from a few nice moves from LH.

That assuming he doesn't have 3 or 4 races where he DNF's. There will be atleast 3 or 4 races where Jenson won't finish this year. Especially as they start to push harder to keep them behind.

Watching I keep waiting for the bubble to burst.

Brawn's advantage has been about 50% just simply their tactics (i.e. Ross Brawn). It is funny watching their main rivals screw up and just let Brawn run away with win after win...

I'm sure there will be times this season that Red Bull and maybe Ferrari now too win a race or two. But I don't hold any hope over the strategy in both teams.

Last season was brilliant.

Was it hell....between ITV's fawning over Hamilton, the distinct lack of overtaking or even closeness generally found at the pointy end of things and the sheer ugliness of the cars it will hardly go down in history as a vintage season of F1. But hey, if you're easily pleased by crap like that....

I like how you're taking this race as a barometer of how things are going to be though. Barcelona is *always* one of the duller races of the year. There have been a few exceptions over the years - 1991 with Mansell and Senna going at it down the main straight, 1996 with the deluge of water and Schumacher's masterclass, 2001 and seeing Mika's car lunch itself right at the very end and Schumacher going by with barely a lap left. But in general, it's a dull one.

We've got Brawn doing well. The Red Bulls look good for more wins. The Toyotas are competitive on their day. The Williams seems to have some kind of pace lurking within. Ferrari are starting to get to grips with the new rules. Renault has Alonso, who can make up for a lot. McLaren will probably start to come to the fore again if they don't write the year off. And you think this season is over already?

**** off is it. There'll be a few stories yet.

becase the probability of jenson finishing outside the points in the last 6 races is much much larger than the probability of him being in the points given recent form.

If he wins another, to win the championship will just be a matter of staying out of trouble, and in the points.

I don't see any team other than BrawnGP winning the championship this year, maybe a Red Bull if they have some luck.

AFAIK all the other teams had every update they have bolted to the car and were still not fast enough.

lol at Ferrari messing up Kimi's quali and not giving Massa enough fuel, you would not expect Ferrari making those mistakes.

snip........
EDIT - Non race stuff:

LOL @ EJ saying a motorhome cost £40 million to run

snip........

TBH I bet he was not that far off in reality. I know someone who worked in the old McLaren Hospitatlity unit a couple of years ago, the one they walked past in Barcelona is nearly twice the size of the old one apparently. That unit was carried to each race in 12 seperate lorries, took 20 people 40-50 hours to construct, had around 60 people working inside it, catered for roughly 250-300 people each day of a Grand Prix, with a budget of approx £100 per head for a four course a-la-carte meal including all drinks etc. The rumours were that it cost in excess of £15 million to build. On top of that you have all the staff wages etc.

Ron Dennis himself explained that in the course of the last five years the old Communications Centre resulted in deals worth $500m between McLaren partners and their customers, so a cost of, lets be very reserved, and say $25 -$30 million each year to run it would still make huge financial sense.

What?

How anyone can say Jenson winning the WC is a 'virtual certainty' is beyond me.

I meant 4 wins with 12 races to go.

Sorry to hear it's beyond you. The bookies think he's almost fives times more likely to win than the next nearest man. On past form, in 2008 Hamilton won with 5 wins from 18 races (28%), in 2007 Kimi won with 6 from 17 (35%), in 2006 Alonso won with 7 from 18 (39%) with a race in hand, in 2005 Alonso won with 7 from 19 (37%) with two races in hand.

That Button already has 4 (24%) wins with 12 races to go. On past form he only likely needs another one or two wins. I think it's a virtual certainty he's going to get another one or two and therefore the championship.
