I don't usually beleive what I read in the press but is this a joke?

The school I work in switched last September, though the primary reason was because knots were too big/kids wore them too low/too scruffily, rather than health and safety.

LOL, what are you exactly going to get your tie caught in that could result in death or injury..? Especially in a school.

We had loads of massive professional tools in our D&T department, belt sanders, drills bench saws etc... Bunsen burners in science and also cookers in the cooking classes too.

Thing is, it isn't really. Those schools moving to clipons will be doing so almost entirely to make their pupils look smarter, the Health and Safety aspect will have been tagged on to the article/inflated so as to garner more attention, because everyone likes to have a good rant about ridiculous H&S, nanny state, politcal correctness etc etc.

I fully appreciate your point, the press do this all the time. It's not that unbelievable though. The thing is, where does it stop? They going to start making pupils wear XXS shirts so they can't physically be "untucked."
Also what happens to the poor people who didn't learn how to tie a tie at school :D

Schools 'worrying about worries' now? Pity they can't worry a little more about turning out better educated youngsters instead of fretting over H&S non-issues. I would love to see the risk assessment that has been prepared for this little gem.

Ties getting trapped in technology equipment? How? Even in my time in such lessons we had to wear aprons to prevent this from happening. It also stopped the rest of your uniform getting dirty.

Next thing will be offices banning paper shredders because you can shred your fingers to pieces. Supermarkets banning cardboard compressors because some idiot could jump in and squash themselves to death. You can kill yourself with anything... hell... a pencil... are they going to ban pencils?

For the record I know it's probably nothing to do with H&S but I love a good rant :D

I suppose every institution and business nowadays is terrified of being sued, which may be another factor that they don't want to publicly admit.

There is no need to change. Schools have had (proper) ties for donkeys years. It is change for the sake of change.
But there's no downside. Increased safety and stopping people from having the wrong end of their tie out etc...

It's funny that most of you seem to be overreacting at the thought of schools overreacting.

What I don't understand is why school kids always seem to knot their ties so that they come up ridiculously short. It looks like a ******* bib on a baby.

kids wore them too low/too scruffily
So tell the kids to wear them properly, and give them a detention.

Never been an issue at my school really, we were "allowed" to take ties of during the lunch break to play football etc (or well we weren't technically but teachers did not enforce it) - and hate to take it off for DT and Art - and labcoats for sciences.

Ties spread MSRA? urm ooook.......

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2965140.stm

You do know MSRA was the media overkill of something that didnt really happen...

Well MRSA almost caused my Mum's elderly Aunt to have her leg amputated. I'd say MRSA happened. There was a time when I would have actually refused treatment in a hospital because everyone I knew who went in came out with MRSA. Fortunately now the situation is much better.

In my secondary school everyone just pulled everyones ties and ended up having to re-do it 500 times a day, but atleast it was still on. With clip ons everyone will continue pulling ties but end up with it in their hands :o

but but thats the only reason I now know how to actually tie one?
Its actually been useful in later life even though being female I don't usually go round in a suit.. So many guys are useless at it so I've had to help them do them, and sometimes had to wear one for my waitressing job.

This is like not teaching kids how to tie shoelaces!!

actually, bets for how long before shoelaces have to be replaced with elastic in case they come undone and you trip over them..

I don't see why some schools still wear ties, it's essentialy giving children a free whip and way to abuse nerds ("nutting" was very popular in my school).

Do away with ties entirely I say.

Although its seems like taking things to far, it will save primary teachers ages after P.E. having to do ties or trying to teach the children to do them!
