Bear Grylls: Chief Scout

Explain how "I stay in hotels" Grylls is better than the "Rabid Bushman" Mears please.

Image for one. The Scouts dont need or want an aging tree hugger. They need someone who's got energy and enthusiasm.

Saying that Grylls is a fraud is pathetic really. He's been made out to be a fraud by idiots not realising that his TV show is just that. It's supposed to be fun and educational not a bore-fest like Mears program.

Both individuals are VERY skilled. Both appeal to different groups of people. This place is one of the most biased online communites I've seen.

The respective skills of the two are irrelevant, the role is that of a public figure head a bit like the queen. Grylls is much more suited to this than Mears as he is far more charismatic and media friendly , scouts has an image problem that it has being trying and failing to overcome for 20 years hence even in this thread you still have the dib dib dib brigade even though no scout has uttered these words in decades. Either way the Scout movement has been dieing on it's ass for 30 years and unless something is done about the cronic shortage of adults interested in being leaders then nothing will improve anytime soon no matter who is installed at the top of the tree.

Spot on.

Why so much hatred towards Grylls? He has knowledge and he trains quite hard to prepare.

He was in the Territorial SAS what ever that is?

Ah yeah, just read the bastion of knowledge (Wikipedia) and he was indeed in the SAS. What he was seemingly lying about was a apparently fictional operation where he broke his back:

Former SAS soldier Chris Ryan has stated he does not believe Grylls broke his back on an SAS operation in Africa and has exaggerated stories about his military record. In an interview with British tabloid newspaper the Daily Star, Ryan claimed: “Bear Grylls goes on and on about an operation in Africa. He tells people he broke his back on an operation but I don’t know where in Africa he would be doing an operation. I’ve spoken to several guys who were regimental sergeant majors and instructors in the regimental SAS but none of them could remember this operation."

Tbh all these survival proggies bore me. I prefer the Top Gear method of exploration; a big car and a nice cool glass of gin and tonic.

I was under the impression that even that was disputed. Iirc he fibbed about certain things he had done in the army.

Its doubtful, given the age he was supposed to be, that he would have been accepted straight into 21 SAS, with no previous military experience or training, he passed exactly the same selection process as the regular SAS, at 20?

A Selection process that has a high drop out rate of even the best of best from the marines and Paratroopers?

Hmmm.

I was amazed to learn that Grylls is an ex-pupil and close friend of a friend of my father. You can say what you like but I've heard a few tales of what he got up to before he was famous and from what I've gathered he is extremely skilled and did this kind of thing long before he had cameras surrounding him.

As has been said before, he easily has the skills to lead the scouts but far more importantly, he has the right image. The guys a legend and a real entertainer :D

A fine choice IMHO. His TV shows might well have been staged but then they are a TV show.

He held the record for the youngest Briton to summit Everest for a good few years. You don't achieve that without a large helping of testicular fortitude. Likewise his record breaking paraglider flights in the Himalayas (Daily Telegraph).

That's if you don't count the Australian/British 22 year old with dual Australian/British citizenship who beat him to it.

I give Bear Grylls full credit for his achievements (and there are plenty of them) but he's been resting on his laurels for far too long. Ray Mears is the deal deal.

yea and his tv programs fake. i'd happily jump into a frozen pond if i had medical staff , rescuers etc watching aswell.

He shows how to get out of situations like that, do you really think he'd risk it all, especially considering he has a wife and children?

dont like him think he's a wally ray mears is much better

Bear Grylls is survival, Ray Mears is more camping/tame survival. I wish people would stop comparing them

So what? He shows survival techniques and it's good entertainment. I couldn't care less if he sleeps outside or in a hotel a couple of miles away.

Grylls is a fraud regardless of his history in the special forces, it's been proven countless times and he's even apologised a couple of times too.

As it says on his program (I know it didn't used to), he is presented with situations and shows how to get out of them. I don't see what's wrong with that.

Bear Grylls would win in fight anyway. Ray Mears is too chubby :p

The sad thing is that despite all his achievements Grylls will always be the Vauxhall of these forums.

No doubt I'd rather be stuck in the middle of nowhere with Ray over Bear but at no stage does that suggest that he's not a good choice for the Scouts.

You other lot just wanted an opportunity to do the whole "My survivalist explorer is bigger than yours!" thing. Honestly it's like watching a bunch of preschoolers arguing in the sandpit.
