18 soon what car ?

If you already have a millie why do you want a quick (ish) car? going by friends I have in the forces you dont get that much free time so might aswell have the bike for fun and a low maint car so your not flaffing about with it when your home.

How are you getting quotes for these types of cars?

When i was 23 and purchased my 2.0i Prelude, insurance companies either flat-out refused insurance for the 2.2 vtec or the difference between the 2.0i and the 2.2vtec was ~£600+ more

I don't know what is more amusing, your ridiculous transport suggestions or the fact you seem to think Afghanistan will be a picnic.

Good luck with that.

Can someone tell me why i can go get insured on my rsv millie for 1k and go silly speeds (130 mph even with 33bhp kit they dont work :P and can be removed by a 4 yearold) but its more for a old banger that does 60mph tops ?

because your insurance company assumes your obeying the law and not riding ride an unrestricted bike and have some sort of conscience and sense of morals so as not to remove the restrictions ?

Mind you, judging by the rest of your post, you appear to be suggesting you're going to defraud your insurance company with the car insurance as well by getting your dad to front you.

Nice going !

I remember when I was 17/18.

I couldn't wait to get going with my lessons so that I could pass and get myself a car. But my excitement started to extinguish when I ran some quotes. I couldn't get myself under £2,000 TPFT. And even that meant going with a banger of a car, 1.0 or thereabouts.

In the end I got put on my mother's insurance as a named driver, and I got to use her car when she wasn't busy (and could come with me, as I was provisional at the time).

I didn't end up passing until a year ago (when I was 23) but even now, I can't exactly run riot with regards to my car choice. If I say the words "supercharger", "turbocharger", or an engine size bigger than 2.0, I suddenly find people refuse to quote me.

My point is, you won't be able to afford insurance on anything huge, and that's if you can find a company even willing to quote you. But it doesn't take long to build trust. A couple of years worth of NCB and experience, and you'll find you can probably think about stepping up in power and size.

Go small to start. It doesn't matter what your "mates" think - if they're true friends they won't judge what car you have. And most of them probably won't even have something of their own anyway.

At 19 it's cost me £613 to get insured on a car thats turbocharged. £750 once I had an induction kit and engine remap done that's taken it to 180bhp.

It's totally difference from person to person I find, half my mates can't get anywhere near a 1.4 Corsa or 1.6 Focus yet I seem to be able to get insured on pretty much anything semi-sensible.

You must suck at car insurance quotes or live in The Bronx then

I'm probably not alone when I say that, for an 18 year old with this kind of attitude, a C-reg Polo is more than fast enough

Will the OP be keeping the bike? If not, the NCB accrued on that could be transferred to a car policy, opening up a whole new load of options.

Buy cheap, buy twice. Luckily you have the money to do so.

Therefore....

Better than being a Bus W***er!

According to janesy 1 year makes all the difference to an 18 year old. And NCB from a moped if he had one would count too.

Never did much quotes for cars at 18 because they were stupidly expensive already but my gf at the time didnt make much difference, probably all depends on the car and pug 106 seem to be rocket high :/
Moped one will count for some places but he will need to call up, a lot of places I quotes for would not count my 1 year ncb from cbt, why I dont know its still a year of no claims lol.

certain types of cars will receive higher claim statistics for a certain age group

18 year olds and peugeot 106s only mean one thing - the max power bridgade.

Yes your car isnt barried up, but theres a whole bunch of them pushing claim statistics up for this age group with this car.

Stick with something that will have comparatively low claim statistics for your age group - like a mondeo or peugeot 406 or something. Something that most 18 year olds dont drive, thus avoiding any added premium for high claim statistics.

I found a simmilar thing with my Vectra VXR. Even though its Group 18, it was still considerably cheaper to insure than an M3. Probably down to the vectra being a family understeering fail wagon in the insurance companies eyes.
