Which is best? Both work out roughly the same price:

AMD X3 920
AM3 Mobo
DDR3
HD4890

Or

AMD X4 940
AM2+/AM3 Mobo
DDR2
HD4870

Used mostly for gaming (1920x1200 res), but also photoshop/webdesign.

I'd get a 955 with AM3 mobo, DDR3 ram with 2x4770 in crossfire. If you can only afford one 4770 for the budget, get another in the future.

This is better...

Can't afford 2 and one would be a step down from my 8800ultra, cant afford the 955 with 4870 or higher GFX.

1st one hands down :)

though amount of ram and HDD space would help :p

Same for both 2x2GB RAM and 3x320GB RAID0. Everything else is identical that's why I only listed these parts.

He is obv looking at pre-built systems....

Nope, don't know why you'd think that

Just wondering, why are you upgrading, I doubt you'll see THAT much difference from your current q6600 set up (for games at least). Maybe try to OC it a bit further or just get a 4870x2 upgrade (bargain at £250).

Because I'm selling my old tower for £600 so only need to spend an extra £100-£150 for the upgrade ;)

Ahhh... In that case.. might not be the best idea, but i'd throw in just for thoughts. tricore 720, AM3 mobo, DDR3 ram with 4870x2, im sure that will perform much better in games.

Is this the way to go then? 720 X3 and HD4870x2 instead of a quad and slower graphics?

If you use it mainly for gaming then yes. If you use other 3D rendering (etc) applications a lot then you might want quads. Drop the case down to antec 300 can save you about a tenner, but it's your choice really.

Not really a fan of the Antec 300, a bit plain for my liking, the 900 is a bit dear! I do use Photoshop quite a lot and I know that used cores well but it is mainly a gaming machine.
