You should probably know this isn't strictly YouTube's fault at all, they are in a process of negotiating with few record labels, mainly Universal, over studios demanding removal of all content that features their videos or music.
Studios make pretty dosh selling exclusive digital rights per region to various companies around the world, and that exclusivity (with large price tag attached to it) is worthless the moment any site can link video or fan videos from youtube. So labels and lawyers are now chasing that with paperwork and youtube, if anything, is actually trying to shake the lot off their back while protecting freedom of people posting their content.
Maybe they will loose to corporate greed in the end and will have to comply like other sharing sites or shoutcast stations had to, but in the process of that happening unfortunately there has to be some compliance for legal reasons. And I suppose bunch of meme watchers posting porn doesn't really help the issue much.

I agree youtube are getting ridiculous. This guy I know loves making boxing highlight videos for fun. There is no harm in these, no broadcaster is losing ppv buys for sticking a bunch of fight clips together, yet they have deleted his account twice for copyright issues.
He has made around 100 videos and spent hours on them. It was great to see the progression he has made, but now he only has 4 videos on his new account.
Does this type of video deserve to be deleted. Surely they should waste their time actually removing videos that do violate laws. So I agree youtube getting there just deserves.

It may be childish and bad taste but I have not laughed so much in ages. Made my day, although spitting my lemsip everywhere wasnt so great.

Once again, footage, just because it's old, isn't necessarily public domain. If you own rights to archive footage you bet your four letters there is money in it. Every time someone mentions a name and the footage is shown, it's katching, every time ESPN Classic wants to do boxing marathon, it's katching. Relatively little in media is actually free. Hell - even "Happy Birthday to You" is not free, copyrights to this 19th century tune were sold in 1990ies for whooping $5 million dollars and until copyrights expire in 2030 the company who owns the rights charges $10,000 in royalties every time you want to capture another Marylin Monroe "Mr. President" pastiche to show on TV or on film. Which is why any large company, from your local restaurant to a corporate event, will come up with some stupid happy birthday chant, otherwise it costs them money for performing copyrighted song in public.
It's easy to jump on Youtube for removing videos, just like it's easy to jump on eBay for removing items without checking, but that's how fun on the net always ends - the moment something becomes overly popular, at some point some Ermenegildo Zegna tie wearing, Yale pijama sporting two pence worth of a glorified ambulance chaser with trust fund will try to impress his boss at morning meeting by pulling "we could sue google for boxing videos on behalf of our client Pookepsie Television Network" card just to climb career ladder. In fact, it's more than probable, that with large enough coverage and few retarded "they call themselves Memes, but are they home grown terrorists" American TV features the copyright owners for the "Kuma" and the agency behind Xibits "And then I was like.." mug photo shoot would crawl out from woodwork armed with snarling lawyers ready to pull all the pedo bear and "we put car in your car" pictures down from most sites and search engines.
