Had to gloat... Update: Added short video on page 4

Sorry guys I couldn't keep this one to myself. Ever since turbo'ing the 5, I've come across some interesting machinery on the road, however this one really made my day.

It's not often you get the chance to see some seriously expensive machinery getting properly hustled, but tonight I had the oral pleasure of hearing a beautiful pearl white Aston DB9 Volante being pushed to the limit down several stretches of fast sweeping B roads.......... all from being glued to his back bumper. Willy waving thread? Don't care! It was just one of those genuine laugh out loud moments that makes all the blood, sweat and money poured into the 5 worth it.

09 DB9 Volante: £110,000
Private Plate: £1,000
Being pushed all the way down the road in some home-brew, junk yard motored £2000 mx5...........

PRICELESS.

I had the same thing a few weeks back by some chav in a Suzuki swift GTI, he was "pushing" me all the way down the Bath road, seemed quite pleased with himself.

Then I turned onto the ringroad and I pressed the accelerator more than half way down this time, opened up a gap of about 20 car lengths in the blink of an eye. When I pulled over at the next roundabout he didn't look quite so smug.

As much as I like the MX5, I'm guessing that the Aston wasn't really trying.

If it makes you feel good, great! But I doubt the DB9 was being stretched, anyone with an 09 DB9 isn't going to risk it surely?!

Pushing a 470bhp, £120k car to it's limits on a public road takes a lot of skill, an extremely fat wallet and not a little stupidity, hence you will rarely if ever find one being driven as such.

Without wishing to be rude or dismissive, I'm pretty certain your MX5 couldn't keep up if the Aston was truly being pushed to it's limits rather than the drivers. However, sounds like you had a blast and gave the Aston driver something to worry about ;)

I've often stuck to the tail of superbikes through the lanes in my Fiat, but I have no illusions it's anywhere near as quick. It's simply easier to drive fast, given a suitably skilled rider on the bike (and appropriate road conditions) I wouldn't stand a chance.

Anyone who has been in a similar situation KNOWS when the car is being stretched. I'm not here to argue the point, but he WAS trying. Almost identical P/W/R so a fair bit of sport!

//Edit:

Ok the car's limits on the straight bits, the drivers size of balls on the bendy bits.

It easy to follow, but leading on twisties in a car worth that much takes balls. I know I would rather follow, no matter how fast my car was. Unless of course, I knew the road like the back of my hand.

I don't mean to come across as dismissive of your adventure, as I am quite impressed that you kept up and it would certainly make me smug if I was in the same position!

I'm sorry mk1_salami, but your mx5 is far from being a £2000 junkyard motor. If you insist it is, sell it to me for £2000 :p

Lot's of nice bits on your 5, iirc nicely sorted 250bhp tubby plus other expensive parts such as the Watanabe wheels I can see. Power to weight wise, I doubt there is much in it especially through the twisties. But yes, the AM owner is never going to push as much when his car is worth at least 20/30 times more.

Clearly you have never been on an early morning hoon with a group of enthusiasts.

I have a standard 1.8 mx5 and on a sunday morning run have regularly kept up with a

Porsche 911 Turbo 996
TVR's of all kinds
Nissan 350Z's
BMW M3's

How have I done this? Keeping up is ridiculously easy on country roads when you are following, I don't think that your turbo has done anything for you against a DB9 on anything but the straights.

Its easy to keep up with stuff in convoy.:p

I would bet my left testicle you wouldn't be able to come close to a 996 in a race with a standard MX5.

My parents live n the outskirts of a small village jast as you hit the NSL to some nice country roads. When they first build a big estate down the road we got a lot of city slickers move as it's not too far to Manchester etc. and there's a lot of nice cars.

The down side is, some of them have had the idoicy to persue me on my usual irresponsible assault on said roads. One Boxster S driver ended up thought a hedge and left a wheel behind and I've seen a few wobbly moments go on behind me. It does take a lot to drive a car with 300bhp+ but it's a shame most owenrs buy them for the badge or just becasue they can although I've got to know a few who can driver properly.

I'll admit I would easily get outdone on some country roads by a fairly warm hatch.

Driving a 230bhp RWD car thats your pride and joy, and the first RWD car I've properly driven, makes me not want to really push for that extra Xmph through a bend. I will happily admit defeat and back off. Something like a CTR would absolutely destroy me along a country road, I have no doubt about that.

To be fair if I had a DB9, and some £2k jap motor was right on my tail, I'd be more worried he was going to lose concentration and hit me, so would speed up a bit, which would give the impression I was 'racing'. I doubt he was trying to prove anything.
