SPL Season 2008/2009 thread

I'm not surprised Strachan has left but I do think he's had a fairly rough deal from large sections of the Celtic support, perhaps he was always on a proverbial hiding to nothing following Martin O'Neill but considering he hasn't had anywhere near the spending power of previous incumbents he's done pretty decently from my point of view - 3 league titles and twice into the last 16 of the Champions League inside 4 years seems a fairly respectable return even without including domestic cups but maybe I'm too easily satisfied.

Most successful Smeltic manager of recent times. Beat O'Squeel but did fit in witht he bigots as he wasnt RC. Not surprised he left surprised he stomached it for so long.

nowt at all to do with that or the 'celtic minded' rubbish thats being punted around.

More to do with the general lack of quality in the football, the dropping of a 7 point lead this year and then of course there is all these youngsters he keeps buying but never playing....

Truth be told, Strachan did us proud for the first 3 seasons and if the right job in the EPL had been there for him last summer he would have been off. His time was up at the club, that happens all over the country at many football clubs.

Thanks for the memories WGS and good luck if and when your appointed Sunderland manager!

Do you honestly think we care whether any of our players or managment staff are Catholic or not? Celtic are an all-inclusive club and so long as they can make a go of it, they are welcome at Celtic Park. Two big names spring to mind who where not Catholic but where adored by the supporters - Jock Stein and Danny McGrain.

Judge your own club and support before you judge mine. A policy of not signing Catholics that endured for over 100 years and fans who celebrate a league win by killing a Celtic supporter.

Funny how the media makes little mention of the violence in Glasgow after the matches between both sets of supporters and various "running battles" (mentioned by local radio), with the BBC only picking up on this story and ignoring the rest of the days events. I wonder if either club will make a public statement condemning the violence by the fans who are as bad as each other when it comes to this stuff?

As for Strachan, he would always have a difficult job of convincing Celtic fans of his ability after the result of his first match in charge and managing after Martin O'Neil. While his signing/tactic policies are in question he did bring domestic success to Parkhead.

That's a load of nonsense about his religion. I don't even know if he is religious, is he? Religion has never mattered at Celtic. Shouldn't bring that kind of rubbish into this thread.

Strachan was judged on how his team played on the pitch. We may have won 3 leagues on the trot, but even the highest points tally was lower than the lowest MON achieved (by a distance). It was pretty turgid stuff at times and coupled with disasterous episodes every now and then you can understand why he didn't win everyone over.

I was happy with Strachan at the helm until the last few months. To blow a 7 point lead twice had the alarm bells ringing. After getting a reprieve in the title race, Celtic only had to win 1-0 in their final two matches to collect 4-in-a-row and we couldn't even do that. You can understand why folk were dismayed at the team and its performance. Thanks for the 3-in-a-row and some good nights, but it was time to move on and start afresh.

YOU have sunk to an all time low using the death of another person to have a pop at rangers, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Scottish football is very dark, why does it always come down to religion, see a Celtic fan was killed in Ireland over the weekend.

Oddie McGoogly, you need some serious help. :D

You sick bitter little man. :)

Are you hurting so badly you feel the need to lash out with the most bizarre propaganda?.

Rmuir, the phrase "C*ltic Minded" is used exclusively by C*ltic fans. On the radio phone in`s, it is common place.

Can you explain exactly what it means?.

I have a C*ltic supporting aquaintance, a rational man, who is convinced that the bigots among the C*ltic support don`t want Protestants in important positions at the club. His opinion is "C*ltic Minded" = Roman Catholic.

I`ve never really heard a suitable explanation of this term or at least one that the person attempting to describe it felt comfortable with.

Fuddy McUglygoogily knows no shame Fletch, however he redeems himself with the endless entertainment he provides us. :D

The fans of Dignity FC are obviously blameless when it comes to sectarian violence and propoganda. It was all a Catholic conspiracy to make them look bad. Aye right.

Your fans celebrate winning the league with violence, you resort to violence when you don't win (remember Manchester). It can only be surmised that you are in fact thuggish in nature and prone to violence whatever the occasion. You claim that the truth is 'bizarre propoganda' and refuse to take any sort of stance against the sectarian bigots who constantly drag your club into the gutter with their vile chants and songs. Dignity FC indeed.

Am I fussed about Ragers winning the league? Nope, Strachan and his tictacs are gone and we welcome the new season.

Eddie, you seem C*ltic Minded, you should apply for the managers position. ;)

You will be by the time i`m finished with you.

I`m tempted to have a look back through this SPL thread and pick out some of your highlights. Perhaps when i get more time in between bottles of Champagne.

Roll on the CL Qualifiers. ;)
