£10 note, ripped?

I'm sure someone here has been in the same position. I have a £10 note here that is ripped in half and is in two separate pieces. If I was to sellotape it back together would a bank accept the note?

The serial number and everything is visable.

Yep, as long as the 2 serial numbers aren't damaged, then it's fine

Yes. When you rip it in half - each half is then worth £5.

If it's exactly in half you can just use it as two fivers.

stick it together with scotch tape.

i once ripped through a few hundred euro in an over-zealous envelope opening. stuck them together with tape, job done.
i also ripped £5 in half once to prove a point

screw taking it to a bank, just use it in a shop. if it's taped properly they won't even notice it

Or hand it to a new employee at your local supermarket for the extra luls and emergency it causes

On a related note - the Bank of Scotland once redeemed an early note based on its remains, or a receipt for it. I'm sorry I don't have a source link just now, but I read it in the HBOS history of money museum in Edinburgh. If the bank believes it is real then they will redeem the value for you.

The bank will take it out of circulation.
Thats what I did on my work experience, haul around sacks of cash in HSBC.

When a bank does that do they get reimbursed by the Treasury?

Yea they get replacement notes, and they burn the rest. A film of the incineration of thousands of pounds of ruined notes was shown in my economics class, everybody was like "NNNNOOOOO, WHAT ARE THEY DOING!"

I assumed they did, I suppose it's similar when a coin or note is taken out of circulation

If you write £10 on a piece of paper you can spend it as money, if the public has faith in it.
