Refurbished laptop - would you buy one?

If its cheap & it works, why not?

Short or no warranty, it's been used so will probably be in less than perfect cosmetic condition and will be more likely to go wrong than a new one.

I personally wouldn't unless it was extremely cheap and I've yet to see any what I consider cheap refurb laptops.

Depends on your idea of cheap I guess, given what Laptops go for in Supermarkets these days, it would have to be VERY cheap.

Depends how cheap. I wouldn't spend anything under say, £350 on a laptop but then again you can get quite good ones brand new for around that price. Cheap I'm assuming to probably be around £100 or less, in which case I'd just save the money and aim for something brand new. But, as I've already said - it's a personal thing, not that I have the cash at the moment anyway! :p

What is the rough spec we're talking here and at what price range? I guess it'd be handy to know what you're using it for too.

Exactly, you can get shiny new ones for what, £250-£300 so I'd expect to pay half that for the same spec refurb, or forget it. But they usually charge not much less than the new price.

I've seen a Dell 6400 on eBay - don't think I'd want to spend more than about £180 though. It will be used for basic web, email and Office (for a family member).

Just bought a refurbished Acer Aspire One, £60 off RRP. It's... well, i cant see a single blemish or mark on it. It's perfect. 1 year warranty instead of 2... but i voided that anyway when i ripped the back apart to put new RAM in ;)

There was a couple of bits of crumb, or something, under the keys but nothing a dry paint brush couldnt sort out :)

Not sure i'd get one from auction site though.

I didn't think upgrading RAM voided your warranty on laptops?

Not sure I'd buy something used and with half the warranty just to save a piddling £60 personally.

Bought a Advent 4211 (MSI Wind) netbook from pcworld for about £80 off normal price and you wouldn't have even known it had been refurbished. Not a scratch/mark on it! And came with a full 12month warranty.

A certain company sell refurb laptops in their Outlet.

My last Windows laptop was one of them, and is strill going strong after 4-5yrs.

What's "a famous auction site"? Do you mean eBay?

eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay eBay

I feel better now

I know plenty of people who have bought refurbished laptops from the high street and every one of them have been a bargain.
The problem is getting them fixed if they do go wrong.

Have the rules changed regarding talking about eBay then?

I've bought second hand non-refurbished laptops and they've been fine. Don't see why I wouldn't buy a refurb as long as the price was right.

I'd buy a system from the Dell Outlet, because it seems many people have had good experiences with those and there's often bargains to be had. Not sure about other manufacturers or retailers though.

To be honest, you're probably better off without the warranty, means you don't have to deal with Acer's crap customer service. They've had my Aspire One for three and a half weeks now, which is three weeks longer than I had it for.

I bought a refurb off the site and thought it was value for money myself. I've since sold on the laptop and the buyer is happy too.
