Ok, so it's not a rebuild as such, because the whole car doesn't need rebuilding, just the engine and maybe the brakes. I thought I'd document my progress though for all to enjoy/hate. :p

The car is a 1986 (D reg) Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI in Graphite Grey and has 163k on the clock. It was going strong until around 5 years ago when a belt snapped and stuffed the engine. At the time the head got sent off for skimming etc. and so it is fine, as are most of the other parts of the car, bar brakes due to it having been sat for ~5 years.

For whatever reason, my brother hasn't ever bothered to fix it, so as I have 2 weeks off work and nothing much to do I called him up and asked what needs doing to it and if he minded me fixing it.

Basically all that needs doing is the engine pulling out, refit all the gubbins, put it back in, check the brakes aren't siezed or anything, refill the engine with fluids and it should run. Obviously timing etc. will need to be sorted and it'll need new tyres, and Tax and MOT.

I plan to start on the car tomorrow or the day after, today I need to move it from it's current location in one of our garages, to another one that has more space and also all the tools I'll need. This will involve dragging the car up a hill with the Landrover and wiggling it around to get it into the garage, which could be interesting.

I'd like to get it done as quick as possible, instead of spending my whole 2 weeks working on the car, which should be fine once I get started as I should then be on a roll so long as I don't hit any nasty snags along the way.

Anyway, pictures...

Yes the engine is being held in place by a piece of wood, and no, I don't know why.

That's it for today.

Sweet

I fancy a 205 GTi cracking little cars, decent low milleage ones arn't cheap though :( and the rest are usualy old hags!

Well mine was in much worse nick than that when I bought it (although it did actually run in a fashion), so a bit of time and effort should turn it into a cracking car :)

Has it been sat there with no oil for 5 years?

Cool little project, it won't go anywhere near as smoothly as you think- but that's the fun eh? :D

Used to have a v2 1.6. Cracking little cars and the 1.9 even more so. As said it'd be worth an Mi16 with all the work you'll have to do anyway, but I'd start with a facelift Miami blue shell as it'll look much better than that early version.

However I'm sure you don't want to be told 'no no do this, do that instead', so good luck and I'll be watching with interest.

I'd disagree, and add that you had the better version.
1.6>1.9 for me every time.

This is why the mi16 is so good, lots more power than the 1.9 and 1.6 revving... ideal!

Also most people who have the gti-6 engine in still prefer the mi16 as it seems to suite the 205 a lot more.
