Starship troopers

We have this discussion every time this film is on, or someone sees it for the first time, it is NOT a cheesy sci-fi B movie, it is a parady of fascist ideology and stupid chest thumping nationalism, its what the world would be like if morons like the BNP ever got in to power.

and just to contrast it with a review that fails to get it entirely:

Its hard to believe there are people on here who might actually believe Robocop is a movie about a cyborg police officer as well.

Yeah, I think most people (over the age of 15) realise what these films allude to, but I'd hardly describe them as high satire. Moreover you can't dismiss the literal interpretation of either film - they were the main selling point, not some underlying pee pee take.

Starship Troopers is just bad...

I still can't take it seriously.

Caspar Van Dien is an even worse actor than Bradley off Eastenders.

watched it for the first time last night, really enjoyed it :D, whats not to like... lots of cheesy soldiers running around shooting insects from the hip with massive rifles and the final insect :O

Great movie, up there with the other Paul Verhoeven films like Robocop and Total Recall.

The sequels were bordering on awful. The big event of the third one of course was Van Dien's return, unfortunately, there was nothing to celebrate there really when you consider all the muck he'd starred in since Troopers #1. And do Sony Home Ent. have to produce cheap knock off's of everything in their back catalogue of 'watchable' films? ('Screamers: The Hunting' being the latest...oh cancel that...'Messengers 2: The Scarecrow')

I quite like the film, but what I dont understand is that they said that they found where to shoots the bugs to kill them immediately (Nervous system area or something) yet none of the troopers seem to know this.

Puzzling

They didn't say that, what they said was blowing off limbs etc still leaves them very capable of killing you, so aiming for the nerve stem would put them down for good... you still have to blast your way through their carapace to get to it.

Awesome film.

great film as is the animated series which i have on DVD.

Roughnecks? I have six seasons of it, but not the one where Rico lands on the ice moon asteroid thing. :(

On another note, I love Paul Verhoeven movies due to the music. Up there with Jim Buckheimer when it comes to choosing the right scores.

I always felt it was because in that first scene:

1. It was dark, therefore harder to aim

2. They were cocky

3. They were inexperienced with real combat.
