The difference between a detail distance of 80 and 30 is barely even visually noticeable IMO. Certainly not enough to hinder someone's enjoyment of the game!

What is the latest patch for this game? I have an 8800GT, X2 3800+ and 2gb RAM, it runs pretty gash at the moment.
Do i need new drivers for the 8800GT, i havent updated for ages (over 18 months)
Latest patch is 1.03
New drivers will probably help, however a new graphics card, more memory and a new processor would help even more.
It is just playable at an acceptable framerate for me using an x2 5600+, 3.5gb memory and gtx260 maxcore.
Once you unlock the middle island the game runs even slower due to higher buildings etc.

v1.0.3.0. If you log into GFW Live, it will auto-update it. I expect it runs a bit poo because the X2 3800+ is a bit low end (for this game). Mind you the latest updates have helped performance somewhat.
Also, you havent updated your drivers in 18 months ? You should see a huge difference if you use the latest ones, they specifically address the performance issues in GTA 4

I average 62fps with everything maxed out except draw distance which is 36. Plays flawless (1680x1050 native). It's amazing how far i can read road signs or see enemies from. When driving at high speeds it's really nice to have lots of fps. Blows me away how realistic passing signs and cars seem.
I played the game with same settings on a dual core (same gfx card) and only got about 32 fps. before that I was not even playing it with my 7900gt, but supposedly they have fixes for that card now.

Just had my first online game. You can actually use any game key that works with GFWL to play GTAIV online, legally. My friend gave me his Gears of War key and I've been playing online all night. Was lots of cheating on team deathmatch (understandable) and LOTS of prepubescent American kids but did manage to meet a friendly chap who I cruised around with and played with all night. The majority of the players are annoying kids but when you're playing with friends, online play really is just brilliant.
Why did you need his key to play the game online, why not use your own? Doesn't sound that legal...
I do agree with what you said about the online gameplay though, too many cheaters ruining it for everyone as usual. Rockstar seem to have disowned us PC folk, they don't seem to care. I do wonder if any of the DLCs will reach this platform.

4gb Kingston Hyper X ddr2 1033
p5kc mb
Duno which way to go for the gfx card, im leaning to a gtx 260 as they can be had for roughly 130 quid ish tho if i can get 2nd hand almost new for 100 that would be sweet. Would this card go well with the cpu im getting?
Also what fps could i expect from this setup, using win 7 probably if not vista ultimate x64.

I have the disks, just no key. You can use any GFWL key to play any GFWL game online.

An update has been released today i think as my steam has just been updating GTA for a while. But there doesnt seem to be anything in the update news and i havent heard anything so ill give it ago and see if anything is different.
