Is capacitor whine more likely with Nvidia cards?

The Palit 8800GT I am using whines if I overclock the shaders quite high, not the GPU or the Memory just the shader. If I run the shaders at default speed the whine goes away!

It's not a biggy as the card is very stable and not to hot (65°C Furmark load) but I can't say I heard this from a Radeon before . . .

It's not the sort of thing I would complain about or think of an RMA etc

My new 285 gtx whines almost all the time (and i've just had it replaced) - the replacement is exactly the same.... Is there anyway to stop it? Otherwise if I swapped it for a 4890 would that be less likely to whine?

If it's whining at high fps, put vsync on (after all, no point drawing 700 frames if you can only see 60 is there).
If it's whining when it's doing displayable speeds, then I know of no fix.

A fiver says that if you run fraps, the menu is pulling $STUPID fps.

Ran FRAPS, while Crysis is showing it's loading screens, (the Crytek logo and NV splash) my 280 was doing 3600 FPS!!!!

This does work on coils, I've not seen it use on PC parts, but I've seen it used on larger power supplies. Also reasonably easy to remove if you need the RMA.

Yep it's brilliant stuff, was just using it earlier to glue a massive cap in place, as if I let it shake around it would eventually wear the metal thru in it's legs and snap off.

It's been used for years in car audio amps, so I see no reason why they don't use it on GFX cards...

yep, the noise is related to the framerate, seen this on both GTX280 and 4870X2 in Crysis menu.

Only card Ive had whining on is the 8800GTS, not saying the ATI are any better than Nvidia but the whining was the single only reason I got rid of the 8800.

My PC is in my living room so noise is very important when the wife is trying to watch CSI and I'm gaming at the same time, she could here the whine over the TV so it had to go.

I thought I was one of the unlucky ones to have a squealing 260...but it turns out it was my hard drive making the noise

Replaced the old drive with a Samsung F1 last night and all is quiet now

Bizarre, I guess I'm lucky that my 8800gt and 7800gt are not squealers.

I had my power supply RMA'd (just got it back today) because I SWEAR TO GOD this whining noise came from it. OCUK replaced it so they must have tested it and found it faulty. It would use to make the noises when loading Windows and it does not now.

However, now I still have the noise during certain things like loading Crysis, then it'll get quieter but still audible. It's overall quieter than before but it's definately the card. Maybe both were/are faulty...

I'll bear with it for a while and see if it changes D:

Never had a problem with it with ati cards, only nvidia ones. Also you get it from the psu a lot of the time.

My laptop does it when scrolling down a webpage, you can control it... when your "still" looking at something like this box im typing in, you get the noise, when you scroll down it goes away.... wierd

Only card I've ever had whine during games was a GTX 260-216 55nm. It was really bad at any time rendering 3D at all.
