I just installed a 650w BeQuiet PSU. All was fine and dandy... until I had a very quick mess about with OCing last night.

Whacked the FSB up to 400 and left most other things on auto. Booted into windows fine, everything running ok, running prime etc.

Anyway that's not the point, the point is that the PSU had developed a high pitched squeal. if i stopped prime the squeal diminished but moving the mouse around would start it up again. Reset the settings to stock and squeal was gone. I assume its something to do with the extra volts the CPU is drawing when overclocked (1.12 ish to 1.2-3 ish from memory).

Either way, should it be doing this? is it faulty or just bedding in? Odd how it only happens when things get OCed...

Spec:
BeQuiet 650
P5Q Pro
Q9450
Corsair 4gb twinex
GTX260 216SC

Overclocking generally damages warranties for a reason so I doubt the seller will take back the PSU. You could try another PSU and see what happens. You could also try locking the memory and seeing if that helps.

It doesnt, the PC is just taking more power when overclocked, the same as if i added a few more HDDs or bought a more juice hungry CPU.

Anyway, (havent been using the new pc for a couple of months for various reasons but back on it now) and the PSU is still whining even now the pc is at stock.

So ill flip it and mount it fan down (mounted in antec p182 with fan up) to check if that helps, if not ill contact the seller and if they cant help then it will be onto bequiet and their 3 year warranty.

Its cap squeal. Some psu's do it some dont.

I had a tagan piperock (funky colors/modular) that looked ace but screamed when under load.

that said be sure its not your gfx card making the noise as the higher end cards do this aswel.

Somewhat similar problem here. My PSU is the Tagan BZ800w and whenever the computer is under graphical load, ie gaming, the PSU makes a very strange squeal/buzzing sound. I've also found its directly linked to FPS inside the games, the higher the frames the higher the pitch. So I've resulted in forcing vSync on all games. Been searching on google for this issue for a few days. My system is only a week old and I've been in contact with my local computer store and he hasn't heard of the issue before.

Specs:
E8400
OCZ 4gb 1066mhz
P5Q Pro
EVGA gtx285 SCC

No overclocking done sofar.

Also heard some GPUs creating feedback on the rail, causing coil whine on certain PSUs.

ZoR I had the SAME issues with the same PSU i RMA'd it and got a different brand altogether. Some PSU's/GFX card combinations just suffer with this problem its luck of the draw that you get a combination that doesnt scream like a little girl

Hmmm... Interesting comments. As i say ill have a play with mine this weekend, swap some cables round, etc etc and see if anything helps.

Shame really as the PC is virtually silent and in reality with the system at stock the whine is practically inaudable. Its just if i overclock in the future it will become an annoying buzz.

Has anyone tried getting a direct replacement to see if a different unit is better or worse?

Oh and its not the GPU, had my ear RIGHT next to the PSU and moving the mouse will cause it to whine. Not related to games either as it will do it under any load (Prime).

Would be nice if i could get a swap of just the PSU, that way i could leave all my cables in place! :)

Yeah, I'm planning on moving some cables around, switch the GPU power cords to another slot on the PSU. I've contacted my retailer and they have agreed to replace my faulty PSU tomorrow. We will see if that changes anything.

Yeah, another squealing PSU user here. Had both a Hiper 770 and a CM700 and they both did it. Very annoying.

So I got a replacement Tagan BZ 900w PSU and just did a quick swap 10 minutes ago. No change, so the store has agreed to change to a different brand PSU which I have here now and about to try. The new one is a Zalman ZM850-HP.

Will keep you posted.

Thanks for the update.

If the same make still squealed after replacement maybe it is as the comment above suggests, some pieces of equipment just don't go well together.... :(

I still haven't had chance to play with mine due to a couple of busy weekends, but I did manage a seemingly stable 20% overclock on my q9450 last night and the squeal from that was just too annoying for me so will most likely be chasing up for a replacement or swap.

Yeah i have a feeling that a different brand is needed. Don'T get a tagan BZ one my experience with these is not a happy one. (screams like a little girlie)

I have a cooler master m850 modular. the squeal is so minute now that you can only hear a paint buzz when you put your head right up behind the PSU exhaust grill.

Well I expected BeQuiet to excel in this area considering their name....

Oh and the only time I have made the GPU sqeal is with Folding@HomeGPU.

I have an old tagen tg530 u-22 (yes, OLD - one of the tickers tho i never rma'ed it) in recent months it developed a whistle at all times while cold, turned out the caps had gone bad (caused by a crapola ups - 450V+ peak voltage = >max rated voltage of input caps). best to keep rma'ing/complaining till you get a quiet one.
its usually gonna be an inductor somewhere thats not glued tight but in the off chance its more serious....

Well... with me being lazy and all I still havent RMAed the unit yet...

However today I flipped the plug on and BANG?! Cue blue flash and me almost dropping my coffee...

Guess the PSU was faulty after all. RMAing, will hopefully get a replacement before the end of the week.

No smoke etc but it blew the fuse in the plug so wasn't something minor. I just hope it hasn't taken out any other components. Put a new fuse in and plugged the psu in after it had been disconnected from the PC but no more commotion, im not putting it back into the pc just in case.

Just a quick check though, a 650w PSU should be amble for the components listed in the OP, right?

It should but BeQuiet may not agree, check out their PSU calculator and then read the thread about it's dodgy numbers that was kicking around here a few days ago.

If I were returning a PSU back to Be Quiet, I would go and use their PSU calculator first and make up a rig that draws less power than your current one so that they cant turn round and tell you that the PSU isn't up to the job...

Their PSU calculator is well dodgy, it claims that 1 GTX280 will draw 700w of power itself!!!

I just bought the 850w Dark Power Pro myself, and since purchasing I have noticed a couple of threads about people complaining about their PSU's... I hope my one doesn't go bad!!!
