After something epic to play

Kinda bored of MMO's these days, so installed and played Deadspace. Cracking game which is very intense. I'm currently playing 1 level per night inbetween sessions of Left4dead and a few random sessions of TF2.

I'm a former TFC addict. Have fond memories of late nights playing that. The new multiplayer shooters just don't seem to hold my attention in the same way, perhaps becasue I suck at them, so I tend to play them in small doses to stop my heading getting fried.

I now fancy getting my teeth into something epic. I'm looking forward to Diablo 3 but thats possibly a few years away, so I'm thinking I might try my hand at a strategy game. Preferbaly one that's not going to confuse me. My experience of strategy is Warcraft 3 and Rollercoaster Tycoon. Both which I loved. Especially Warcraft as the learning curve and story was great.

Any suggestions?

Thinking a few weeks with relaxing single player and interesting story, then maybe move onto multiplayer. Would like to take advantage of my 1920x1200 rez so not really interested in old games that don't support high rez.

I'm open to other types of games. Main priority is a relaxing game with an interesting story. Got many FPS games for a quick blast when needed.

By the way. Deadspace reminds me of watching Alien for the first time. Very scary stuff.

Strategy;

  • Company of Heroes: brilliant game, great SP missions and MP action is very good
  • Warhammer: Dawn of War: by the same guys; so fairly similar but more action
  • C&C3: great SP campaign, MP is a bit dull
  • Demigod is good, although the lack of a campaign is a shame.

In the RPG and shooter genres....tried Fallout 3? Just got into this myself and it's spot on, great story, bonza stuff :)

Also you might want to give FEAR 2 a shot if you like scary shooters. It has multiplayer also.

Oh yeh, and STALKER; kinda like the mutated Ukrainian half brother of Fallout 3, that lives in your loft and eats worms.

But enough about that, you wanted strategy dammit :D

They don't really have the storyline you're after, but for epic strategy, you might like to take a look at the Total War games. I've lost hundreds of hours to these games, and what could be more epic than world domination? ;)

The older titles have plenty of mods and stuff available too.

Total war like said above would get your 'epic scale of war' juices going.
but if you like your fps and your rpgs then id definatly sugest Fallout3. The game is massive! The world is free roam, you level up and such but its an fps too, and well i cant explain it any other way but Epic, so its probably good for you.

Regarding Fallout3. I'm aware of it but never really took any interest when it was released. I really should go read some reviews of it.

I've always assumed it was a little like Deus Ex with lots of dialog and story with generally 1 on 1 combat. Maybe this will fit the bill.

Just realised there is a Medieval 2: Total War demo on Steam. Will start the download before I go to bed. Thanks.

give TF2 some time, I know what you mean about TFC, that's the best online game ever imo

but TF2 is an awesome game, just very different to TFC

Man! I've had this game since January and still have not installed it. Recently it seems that few people have anything bad to say about it. Just wish I wasn't such a chicken when it comes to monsters...

Supreme commader for stratergy games, cant get any better.

Mass Effect for action RPG

Fallout 3 for FPS RPG

And ignore calls for crysis, if your only after eye candy sure play it, otherwise its a complete tripe of a game.

Your opinion isn't fact, just because you didn't like it doesn't mean it's a horrible game. It's one of the better FPS games released in the last couple of years, especially as far as single player goes. It has a decent storyline and there's no point in which I've played it where I felt it was made badly in any sense.

how's about Titan Quest? Kinda like Diablo but with very pretty graphics and huge replayability due to the different characters and kit drops. Reasonable story line and great fun teaming up with a mate.
Alternatively Guild Wars. Along similar lines but it's an MMO that's free to play but can still suck up huge amounts of time levelling and playing through the story. If you don't wanna team up, you can use AI buddies which do a decent enough job to get you through all but the most difficult of quests.

Both games available for around a tenner and can keep you going for weeks if not months.

personally didn't mind crysis, i thought it was a fun FPS game with yeh nice eye candy but it had me playing it right to the end unlike allot of todays games where single player just makes me snore. Multiplayer gaming all the way for me. bring on AVP!

He asked for an "epic" game and I can't think of any more epic scale FPS game than Crysis.

You get to see a US carrier group get sunk, a mountain explode, a nuke going off, etc :p

Crysis is really good, especially you're coming to it for the first time fully patched up and with a nice powerful graphics card. One of the few fps's I've bothered to finish this year.

Strategy - another vote for the Dawn of War. The original has a great story and it easy enough to get into, while managing to feel suitably epic.

Its hardly tripe is it? The story line isnt so great and the later half of the game isn't as fun as the first, but you can go about your missions with a decent amount of choice. Also the landscape is immersive and beautiful. I didnt get particularly bored until the ice came.

To OP: Just make sure you can run crysis.

fallout 3, crysis, medieval total war, supreme commander.

All brilliant epic games.

I would say Empire Total war too but it was fundementally broken when they released it ( no naval invasions..lol,i mean wtf?) and i'm waiting for the next patch which will hopefully have it working as described. I have it sitting waiting..
