Hi there,

I read in the newspaper that there is going to be a iPhone price cut, any idea of what models this price cut will be on?

Also what will the new price be, and when will this price cut take place?

I googled but found dodgy websites so thought I would ask here.

Thanks.

well thats crap ? why are all these sites saying you can get a i phone for $99 or £78 or what ever

well i challege you to try and buy one for under £100 thats just pure and utter bull****

There's been a price cut in the US. The current £:$ exchange rate and O2's reluctance to subsidise the iPhone means that us Brits won't see that price cut.

It is free on a £45pm tariff, and £96 on a £35pm tariff.

When paying such a big monthly premium for 18 months, does the £10-20 saving really matter that much??

I buy a new phone once every four years or so, and an 'old' iPhone on PAYG for a reasonable amount of money would be top of my list now... if such a thing existed.

So far it looks like it doesn't and won't, which is disappointing but predictable. The iPhone is a nice piece of kit, but it's also a huge cash-cow. I can't really blame providers for milking it till the teats bleed.

Why buy one at all iphone is one of the most over rated devices ever.

For full price, I agree 100%. But having played with someone else's, I now see what the fuss is about. It's a lovely bit of design IMO. I'm just far too tight to place an Apple-sized premium on design over function.

The $99 one in the US comes with a 24 month contract. I'm sure O2 would gladly pass on that 'saving' if you really wanted it.

O2 are offering the iPhone on both 18 and 24 month contracts in the UK.

24 month contracts are a much worse deal in the UK too. If you want to terminate your AT&T contract early, you pay between $175 (at the start of your contract) and $60 (towards the end of your contract). Over here, you have to pay off the rest of the contract in full (i.e. between £805 and £35 on an average contract).

My point is that O2 are offering the '$99' handset free here on 18 month contracts so the whole thread is misleading.

Your second paragraph does surprise me though, very interesting - have you got a link to that? It must be some kind of regulator requirement or something and I doubt AT&T would want let you return as a customer if you bought a heavily subsidised phone and then the next day ended the contract for $175.

Yup, see section 1. I guess they can do this because phones aren't subsidised as much in the US. Historically, the big fighting ground for US operators has been the number of minutes included rather than what phone is being bundled with the contract.

Tariffs and phones are waaaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper in the UK - trust me!
$199 for an iphone and then a contract that is min. $80 or so a month!!! Awful!

Yep - it's all about minutes over here.
They do neat stuff like house hold contracts, add two phones on to one plan (or up to 6 phones if you like) and all share a set amount of minutes.
1 phone is expensive - but group together and its a pretty good deal.

Terrible? Free phone, 1200 minutes for £45 is a good buy imo
With only 500 texts & a 24 month contract? T-mobile @ £31: 800 minutes, unlimited texts and 18 month contract. Orange* @ £35: 1200 minutes, 500 texts and 24 month contract.

You may find it acceptable, but it is by no means a good buy.

*Admittedly orange doesn't have unlimited data on that plan.

18 month contract, not 24. Unlimited data, free access to O2's hotspots, BT Openzone's hotspots and "The Cloud" hotspots, reduced International calling rates and roaming rates. 1200 minutes, 500 texts, free iPhonr 3G.

£45 month is not bad at all imo :)
