Microsoft has said it is gearing up to release a free anti-virus service aimed squarely at competing with products from Symantec and McAfree in particular.

The software giant's employees are already testing an early version of the software, which is codenamed Morro, and Microsoft has said that it will soon release a beta version to the public. The Microsoft spokesperson stopped short of giving an availability date for the trial version, though.

Investors are closely monitoring the free service amid concerns that it may hurt sales of products from Symantec and McAfee - both billions of dollars of revenue each year with their paid-for anti-virus suites.

They don't stop do they lol

It should integrate well, but detection rate.... hmmm... as an MS product I think that would take a while :)

Stelly

I'd love to see them destroy the gash that is Norton, but I bet they won't be "allowed." :)

Quiet an interesting move by MS, strange they never did one before, maybe Bill didn't want to?

Anyway, I'd use it providing it doesn't slow the system down.

If it is good then people will use it, otherwise it will go the way of One Care or whatever it was called. The detection rates of their previous offerings just haven't been as good as the free AVs out there.

If it does turn out to be good then it will be an interesting option for businesses who would save thousands not renewing their 3rd party AV licenses.
